Ticket Giveaway - Peter, Bjorn and John's 10th Birthday at Club Nokia

Although most of us were introduced to Peter, Bjorn and John's music from their catchy 2006 single "Young Folks", which happened to be the first track ever on our monthly mixtape series back in July 2006, the Swedish trio had already released two prior full-lengths at that point and had their first rehearsal back on November 21st, 1999.

This Saturday, they will round out a recently announced "Surprise Birthday Tour"on their actual 10th birthday as a band at LA's very own Club Nokia with their favorite Swedish singer El Perro Del Mar and LIGHTS ON, the San Diego band we championed on our Winter '09 Collection.

We are giving away a pair of tickets for this Saturday's show, open to all ages. To win, you need to be a current or new member of our FoundTrack Facebook fan page and tell us what your favorite song featuring whistling is (with the exception of "Young Folks" of course.) Just leave your entry on our wall or send us a message. The winner/song will be announced on Friday via the FoundTrack Facebook/Twitter pages and will get a shout out on our next podcast. You will be on the PB&J guestlist +1.

In case you miss out on the giveaway, tix are still available for purchase for the last three dates of the tour and they are also giving away tix on the PB&J twitter (just gave away 2 tix for their SD show for the first person to bust a twitpic of their arse). Each show in this special engagement series will feature one or several secret special surprise guests including dancers, singers, rappers, folkrock artists, jazz musicians, celebrities, stand-up comedians, magicians, etc... They had Spank Rock, Amanda Blank and others at their philly show...The band will play some rare old/brand new or never-before-heard songs with an amazing birthday light show from the award-winning light technician Ed Warren. There will be a whistling contest where the winners get to be onstage performing "Young Folks" with the band. Special Peter Bjorn and John merch items will be given away for free after the show and this will also be the last tour PB&J will make before going into the studio, so if you can't wait until 2011 then don't miss the party.

Upcoming Tour Dates:
11/19 @ Great American Music Hall - San Francisco, CA
11/20 @ Great American Music Hall - San Francisco, CA
11/21 @ Club Nokia - Los Angeles, CA (Actual 10-yr Birthday)

Also, Dance Right is Presenting the Peter, Bjorn and John Afterparty at Three of Clubs (Hollywood) with Brother Reade, Them Jeans and Bobby Evans to join a special DJ Set by Jaime (The XX). RSVP Required.

John G Avildsen - Overlooked Auteur (Bonus Double Feature)

You may not know the name John G. Avildsen by heart but you definitely know his films by the impact he's had on yours. The director behind countless classics from my childhood including "Leon on Me" (1989), "The Karate Kid" (1984), and "Rocky" (1976), was honored this past week at Cinefamily's Presentation of their Friday Night November series, Overlooked Auteurs, as they featured two of his hits, "Rocky" and "Joe" (1970). I jumped on the opportunity to see Sly and the Family Stalone on the big screen and get to know a little more behind the orchestration of one of my favorite films of my time in this life. I randomly ended up sitting beside Mr. Avildsen and his lady, whose phone went off in the middle of the movie...awkward. I couldn't hold back the years or the tears from a perfect film and neither could John G, wiping his eyes as the final still punched out a swollen shut-eye sly with his consolation prize before the anthemic score. Because he gets so many of the same questions about the making of Rocky, Mr. Avildsen's son put together a nice little trivial video as a splendid retort/report called "Father Rocky", manipulated from an obscure italian film.

Damn...what i'd give to get some of those Avildsen chromosomes...For Part 2 in the directorial showcase, I was able to explore his less-commercial but still critically acclaimed Joe, a darker drama, displaying the differences in class during the hippie movement of the late 60's starring Peter Boyle and Susan Sarandon early in their careers. The theme song/soundtrack are worth noting so check out Vinnie Rattolle's blog for a nice review of the film and soundtrack rekindling.

Cinefamily has decided to do a bonus 35mm MEMBERS ONLY double feature of some more fun titles from the filmography of John G. Avildsen feat. manic 1981 Dan Ackroyd/John Belushi vehicle Neighbors, which has to qualify for one of the weirdest studio films of my favorite decade and still unavailable on DVD in the U.S. The first film of the double feature is a surprise but i somehow believe that it will be incredible.

If you're like me and you don't have a membership but want to sign up, they will accept enrollments on the night of. Membership info. is right here. If you're not a member, do as I and sign up at the screening. Think of it as a much more socially interactive netflix account of some of the best underground films you can't find on DVD or at a theatre near you... Trust me, The Silent Movie Theatre is Golden.

The Drums - LA Debut Review

The surf pop sound that is The Drums finally made their way to a more appropriate coast for their LA debut and sole performance last night before a packed FREE show for their 10pm Spaceland appointment that carried a line down to Silver Lake Blvd's 7-11. The pretty boys from NY were rounded out by a nice back up female vocal harmonic duo and most certainly lived up to their hype with catchy melodic, 80's new wave synth-pop and a thumping drum for their namesake. Was digging the stilo of singer Jonathan Pierce (splitting image of Johnny from Karate Kid) and his voice which was reminiscnet of Echo and the Bunnymen's Ian McCoullough at times but when he'd speak between songs it sounded like he had a british accent. Maybe he's just getting ready for the tail end of their tour, which will be in the UK after this Thursday's show at UCSB. Below is a live video i took from last night's peformance of "Let's Go Surfing", which would even get me in the sea this fall.

I've also featured clips of performances from other notable tracks, "Submarine", and "I Feel Stupid" on the FoundTrack youtube page. Become a subscriber to receive updates on all of our videos, interviews, etc.

Sui Generis x San Francisco

We are but a blank canvas and fashion is the paint we use to add color to ourselves and our lives! Without fashion life would be rather boring. With that said, fashion is something I love and high fashion is something that I like to indulge in from time to time - yet with the price tag that comes along with high-end garments and the pace at which things become outdated - one could easily go broke chasing the latest and greatest.

While on a recent trip to San Francisco, I was introduced to a store called Sui Generis - what a surprise I found there! Sui Generis is similar to Crossroads Trading or Buffalo Exchange - in the sense that they are a new and recycled retailer. These types of retailers offer great selection at half the price. Yet, let me stress that I use the word "similar." What sets Sui Generis apart from the other two similiar retailers is the quality of the pieces they choose to select and the manner in which they present their selections. Miguel Lopez and Gabriel Yanez have a great eye for fashion! Let me restate that, they have a sixth sense for fashion! Whether you are walking past their intriguing store window display or standing in the middle of their exquisite store amazed by all the splendor - you can feel the passion they have for the art.

During my visit I had to pick up an item - these Prada pants were speaking to me so I had to answer yes!, when they asked me to take them home!

If you are in the San Francisco area do not leave without making a stop @ Sui Generis! Don't take my word for it - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom sent a letter to Sui Generis congratulating Miguel Lopez and Gabriel Yanez on winning The Best of the Bay Award 2009 for Best Mens Clothing Boutique!!!

Orange Peels (Record Release Party) at Bootleg Theatre

So if you're into happy music of the pop variety, Foundtrack friend Maxwell (Maximum Thrills/Viva Radio) helped set up a lil' show in LA for San Francisco band the Orange Peels at the Bootleg Theatre, 2220 Beverly Boulevard in Echo Park tonight at 9:30pm.

It's the Orange Peels album release show for their new record 2020, out now on Minty Fresh Records. The Orange Peels are led by Allen Clapp, who i was introduced to a year ago when i asked former FoundTrack contributor Dev about the meaning of the Twee music genre. Maxwell recommends you check out their finest record in 1994, "100% Chance of Rain" under the name Allen Clapp and His Orchestra. My personal favorite on that fine record is "Something Strange Happens".

The Corner Laughers are coming down with the Peels from San Francisco to support, bringing their ukulele-driven pop sound with them and new local buzzband Pearl Harbor are rounding out the lineup, led by Piper and Skylar (who's only 14!). Pearl Harbour make dreamy pop in the vein of Fleetwood Mac or so sez Pitchfork who recently gave them this review.

The Drums Dip into the West Coast

In case you haven't heard about the buzz behind NY's The Drums, their music will stick to you like glue. They have only formed for about a year and have amassed a huge fan base across the pond in the UK and now are hitting up the best coast for the first time ever. Let's give them a warm welcome as they give us a few chances to check them out starting tonight in SF as well as a FREEBIE monday night at Spaceland for the Happy Hollows residency with Evan Way (Parson Redheads) and Random Patterns . Here is a nice and simple video to "Let's Go Surfing", one of The Drums many standout tracks on a stellar premiere Summertime EP. Head over to RCRDLBL for a FREE exclusive download of the "Let's Go Surfing" - Digital single with remixes.

The Collection x Mahtab Azimi

With Fall here and winter quickly approaching it's time for the ladies to fall into something sexy. The sweatsuit jumpers with the Ugg boots are just not doing it for me - not really sure if they ever did. Don't get me wrong ladies I understand the amount of time and effort involved in getting dolled up must get annoying and bothersome...but I do have a solution!

The Collection by Mathab Azimi is your answer. The designs are simple yet stunning, the fabrics are rich and comfortable .......and the price, well let's just say will allow you to still buy that designer handbag you want!

Mahtab Azimi has created a line that is classy, stylish, sexy and versatile. If the winter night is just a bit too nippy then throw on some leggings under one of the dresses. However if you can bare the cold wear the dress and nothing else! There is a simple elegance to every piece in the collection that makes it one of my favorites!

"The Marilyn is Greek-Goddess inspired. I love draping and shearing. You can see it throughout my entire collection; all of my pieces have draping and shearing details. Every piece is inspired by a person, people, an event, a time in my life, a dream..." - Mathab Azimi

Mathab, I love draping and shearing too and want to see more of it! The Collection has me inspired - inspired seeing the ladies put the "S" back in Sexy! I'm ready to worship a Greek-Goddess...
