Movie Trailer Mondays - 2008 Year in Review

So 2008 is coming to an end, and it's been an interesting year in film to say the least. While some say the volume of "high quality" movies was lacking, I beg to differ. I actually think it's been a really cool year in that there were quite a number of big budget films that had real substance to them AND we got several smaller pictures like "Man on Wire" and "The Wrestler." This year we've seen the biggest box office in history since Titanic in the way of "The Dark Knight", AND the comebacks of badass actors such as Robert Downey Jr and Mickey Rourke. Since I figure there are a million sites out there that will be sharing their favorite movies of the year, I figure I'd share my favorite TRAILERS of the year in no particular order. Keep in mind that a few of these trailers came out in '08 but the films they represent won't be out until next year.

WATCHMEN
Teaser/Trailer # 1

The unexpectedly cool use of the Smashing Pumpkins song featured in this trailer really sets the tone in a very powerful manner. The graphic novel that Watchmen is based on is not only one of the greatest graphic novels ever written, but many critics consider it to be amongst the top 100 novels of the 20th Century. I'm excited for this one in 2009- Unfortunately Warner Bros and Fox are currently disputing who owns the rights to it, so don't be surprised if the release date gets pushed out!

THE WRESTLER
Trailer

This particular trailer was kinda interesting for me because I actually managed to catch the film at the AFI fest before the trailer was even released. Regardless, the trailer really captures the essence of the film- The movie and Mickey Rourke's performance BOTH delivered, and it was a truly awesome depiction of a broken man's inner turmoil.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE
Teaser/Trailer #1

Bond was back in a big way this year following up on the success of 2006's "Casino Royale." "Quantum of Solace," this year's sequel with the uber bizarre name went on to have the biggest Bond opening ever out of all 22 007 films. This trailer defintely helped in achieving this feat, though unlike the first two films mentioned on this list, I have to say I ended up liking the trailer to the movie better than the actual film. Don't get me wrong though, "Quantum" was fun- It just didn't live up to all the grittiness and great dialogue of its predecessor.

STAR TREK
Trailer #1

Now here's a film I never thought I'd feature in any sort of top picks of the year list. The trailer to JJ Abrams' upcoming Star Trek franchise reboot suceeded in doing exactly what the film is hoping to do- to expose the Star Trek brand to a new and non-geeky crowd. This trailer played at the screening of 007 Quantum of Solace I attended and everyone in the crowd seemed to be stoked by it... defintely excited for this one in '09.

DEFIANCE
Trailer #1

"Defiance" is a film that I've been stoked to checkout ever since I saw the first trailer to it back in February this year. Due to what I'm assuming is an awards season strategy, the film has just recently been released to the public. I managed to catch the film on a screener copy recently and I'm happy to say it totally delivered- If nothing else, the film was totally photographed in an absolutely gorgeous style, and I think that this and "The Dark Knight" are the two top contenders for the '09 Oscar for Cinematography.

IRON MAN
Final Trailer

"Iron Man" was a movie that really caught me off guard this year- I was truly expecting a cheesy typical superhero movie when I first heard about it, but the trailers just kept getting better and better. I've gotten pretty good at being able to spot a potentially bad film from how the trailer looks and this one actually seemed to be looking better and better as the trailers kept coming out. Long story short, this film now has it's place in big budget comic book movie history thanks mostly to a badass comeback performance by Robert Downey Jr.

CHANGELING
Trailer

The trailer to Changeling kinda wigged me out when I first saw it- The concept/real life story seemed far fetched yet totally intriguing at the same time. The film seemed like it was shot beautifully and the performances looked like they would deliver. Lucky for all of us it delivered on both counts. It was great to see Angelina Jolie in a meaty role that let her get back to her strong acting roots, and as he does every year during awards season, Clint Eastwood delivered another Oscar worthy film.

MAN ON WIRE
Trailer

Wow. What can I possibly say about this one? Just go out and see it if you haven't! If you have even the slightest sense of adventure in your blood, this film is just what you need. Having seen the trailer now before AND after watching this fantastic documentary, I've got to say that the trailer does a great job of highlighting the essence of the film without giving away the best parts of it. This film definitely deserves the best documentary Oscar for '09 (which it is for the most part, yes it did.

ROCK'N'ROLLA
Trailer

The "RockNRolla" trailer caught my eye since it seemed to be a return-to-form for director Guy Ritchie who gave us the totally grimey/funny British crime caper films "Lock Stock" and "Snatch." His most recent films have been pretty awful to say the least and this one looked to make up for them. So, DID "RockNRolla" end up delivering? The good new is for the most part yes it did. The end result was a bit of the typical formulaic Ritchie syle, but as most people would say, "if it ain't broken, why fix it?..." **BONUS TANGENT STORY- My friend Morgan and I sat next to the strangest and most boisterous solo moviegoer ever during our showing of the film and he definetly added a gloroius Cockney soundtrack element to our evening.

TROPIC THUNDER
Trailer

Ok so I mentioned earlier that this list was in no particular order, but I do have to admit that these two final entries were amongst my VERY favorite movies of the year. "Tropic Thunder," the high concept war spoof delivered on it's equally high concept trailer. The film featured ANOTHER comeback and standout performance by Robert Downey Jr (as the Dude playing a Dude disguised as another Dude), and an equally hilarious comeback performance by Tom Cruise (both of whom have been nominated for Golden Globes for their performances). I definitely think that Tropic Thunder is destined to be 2008's bizarre Zoolander-like cult sensation of the year.

And now, here is the....

TRAILER OF THE YEAR!:

" THE DARK KNIGHT"
Trailer #1 AND #2

Honestly, what can you say about this film that hasn't already been said? Look, I know I'm a big Batman nerd, and quite frankly I don't care- this was the most hyped movie I can remember in a LONG time, and unlike most hyped-up movies it delivered on every account. "The Dark Knight" managed to move beyond the tragic legacy of Heath Ledger's passing and really get people talking on many levels. The film is likely to be nominated for several Oscars and take home several as well. Talk about a perfectly executed marketing strategy- The trailers for this project were epic (a word I try never to use) and grandiose in nature.

As we look forward to 2009 take another look all of the trailers here and hope that we have this much to talk to next year as well- here's to another good year of trailers AND more importantly, good films.

** My favorite Film SOURCES from this past year- Cinematical, Deadline Hollywood Daily, In Contention, Superhero Hype, Coming Soon, Defamer, Empire, Apple Trailers, Box Office Mojo, and of course, IMDB.

FoundTrack's Fall '08 Collection (Track 20/20) Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno - Mi Chocolatina

Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno - Mi Chocolatina (Track 20/20)
Written, produced and arranged by William Holland
(P) 2008 Tru Thoughts Ltd
Published by Full Thought Publishing
Taken from the album ‘Death Of The Revolution’ (TRUCD163) (Sample/Purchase) www.tru-thoughts.co.uk
http://www.myspace.com/quanticmusic

Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno is the latest guise in a constantly evolving musical production polaroid from the Columbian based beatmaster Will Holland, AKA Quantic. The concept and style of Flowering Inferno ignites from hedonistic, easy-listening dub and reggae inspired music from the 70's made in a tropical climate. The Colombian climate, in this case in which Death of the Revolution was recorded, has certainly made it's musical stamp with the multi-intrumentalist playing exotic native instruments such as the Guacharaca and the Gelta in addition to his own usual efforts and original compositions on the piano, guitar, and accordion with little in the way of sampling. Death of the Revolution also features a number of guest performances from a host of Latin America's finest musicans to produce authentic dub and cumbia rhythms similar to other Colombian icons like Pedro Laza and Michi Sarmiento from the north coast.

Following the release of this album, I was lucky enough to see Quantic perform live at Zanzibar's Afrofunke with Jeremy Sole, who considers Will one of his greatest inspirations and the Santa Monica venue had transformed into the exact climate in which the album was produced. For a once in a lifetime dance experience, I highly recommend looking into his tour in the future. Our featured "Mi Chocolatina" is a fitting way to round out our collection of music from the Fall. We had to leave listeners wanting more and therefore...the second Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno album is due in 2009 so stay tuned for more updates...until then, check out this brilliant animation video of "Death of the Revolution", the titular track off the album.

FoundTrack's Fall '08 Collection (Track 19/20) - Arabian Prince - Let's Hit the Beach

Arabian Prince - Let's Hit the Beach (Track 19/20)
Album - Innovative Life : The Anthology 1984-1989 (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Stones Throw
http://www.myspace.com/arabianprince

Back in the mid-80's when L.A. had a solid underground scene, a bunch of "Party" D.J.'s were ready to put L.A. on the map not only for electro music but for Hip-Hop as well. The most notable artists from this scene became part of The World Class Wreckin' Cru featuring Dr. Dre & Dj Yella, Egyptian Lover, and Arabian Prince <---the fly guy in the pimp prom pic above. While Dre and Yella went on to fame with N.W.A. and Egyptian Lover went on to D.J. as an opening act to many great electronic artists, Arabian Prince was left in the dust. That is, until recently when the people at Stone Throws decided to put out a collection of his early dancefloor hits in Innovative Life, presenting a glimpse into an overlooked chapter in hip-hop's story. This anthology collects many of his groundbreaking electro-rap work recorded between 1984 and 1989, including our featured homage to the lovely venice beach to keep you warm and toasty this Fall/Winter. This is a must listen for fans of 2 Live Crew, Egyptian Lover, Sir Mix A-Lot, and other 808 bassheads. Here's another little treat, the music video for "She's Got a Big Posse" from Arabian's solo debut album from 1989, Brother Arab.

Special thanks to Doctor Paul Jones (Reckless Romeo) for his Arabian Prince prognosis for this feature.

FoundTrack's Fall '08 Collection (Track 18/20) - The Pharcyde - Passin' Me By (Hot Chip remix)

X

The Pharcyde - Passin' Me By - Hot Chip RMX (Track 18 of 20)
Album - Rmxxology (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Delicious Vinyl
http://www.deliciousvinyl.com/rmxxology
http://www.myspace.com/thepharcyde
http://www.hotchip.co.uk

Two major alternative artists collide in this super rad track- one of which is arguably the most unique hip hop act of the 90s, and the other, one of the biggest British acts of the 2000s. Let's begin with the hip hop half of the puzzle- a few guys that need no introduction, The Pharcyde!

The group was originated in South Central Los Angeles, where the group's members grew up, and a budding underground hiphop scene was flourishing. While the group has gone through many ups and downs and various lineups in recent years, the original and four best known members of the group from it's prime are Imani, Slimkid3 (Tre Hardson), Bootie Brown and Fatlip (A partner in crime of our good friend DJ KnewJack). Several marquee LA producers have worked with the group, including J-Swift and then the late great J Dilla. The group's best known for it's classic debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, and hit 90s singles including "Passin' Me By" (the subject of this post), "Runnin'", and "Drop" which got this super cool high concept music video treatment by Spike Jonze:

While Pharcyde created the classic original version of "Passin' Me By," it was caliente British group Hot Chip that did the bang up job on this particular remix that we featured on the FoundTrack Fall '08 Collection. The electropop group has seemingly blown up in the last few years, and has even been Grammy-nominated. They've released three studio albums—Coming on Strong, The Warning, and Made in the Dark- the latter two which were named Album of the Year and Album of the Month respecitvely by Mixmag.

Now that you've heard the "Who" portion of this track's background, it's time to move on to the "Why" and "How." Remixes are often a scary area- especially when it comes to really well known tracks. Leave it to the good folks over at Delicious Vinyl and artists such as Hot Chip to relieve us of this concern! The label produced the super cool Rmxxology compilation which also features the likes of Peaches, Pink Enemy, Fatlip & Aaron LaCrate. I highly recommend picking up a copy for yourself- You can learn more about this collision of Titans new and old at Rmmxology's official site.

In the meantime, in the spirit of the holidays and getting back to your roots, here's the super chill original music video to Pharcyde's "Passin' Me By":

FoundTrack's Fall '08 Collection (Track 17/20) - The Phenomenal Handclap Band - 15 to 20

The Phenomenal Handclap Band - 15 to 20 (Track 17 of 20 - Damn! almost a sweet coincidence)
Album - The Phenomenal Handclap Band (Unreleased Advance)
Label - Self-Release (Embassy Sound Productions)
http://www.myspace.com/embassyproductions
Phenomenalhandclapband.blogspot.com

Daniel Collas and Sean Marquand are two NY Underground DJ's who grew tired of playing other people's music so they decided to produce their own on Embassy Sound Productions, creating groovy dance-oriented rock fueled by live instrumentation instead of their Mac Powerbooks. Their initial success in revitalizing the careers of two veteran soul acts,
New York's Joe Bataan and Brazil's União Black, had given them the motivation to form The Phenomenal Handclap Band, a supergroup of 25+ consisting of a who's who in the indie rock and underground soul scenes. The band's yearbook picture would feature members of TV on the Radio, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Si Se, Calla, Mooney Suzuki and many more with honorable mention not pictured album contributions from members of Antibalas, Oakley Hall, The Dap Kings, Diamond Nights, Persephone's Bees and Apollo Heights. Mix together all those guys and you get a sound that is characterized by anthemic dance-flooriented progressive rock with 60's soul, 70's disco, 80's electro and 90's hip-hoperatic orchestral backbeats.

Their self-released/titled debut album is unavailable for purchase but the band has been kind enough to contribute their debut single "15 to 20" for our Fall collection feat. The Lady Tigra (L'Trimm) on vocals singing "5,10,15,20.....45,50 all that time still riding the bus." I'm guessing she's referring to the head count on the Phenomenal Handclappers tour van. Last i checked on their myspace, their were 28. Perhaps NY's answer to Canada's Broken Social Scene, inviting any and all people to collaborate and join the funkiest fam in the land. Although they've only had a handful of live performances I hear they're not to be missed. Prefix Mag has a comprehensive gallery/review of their debut show in July. Here is a little preview thanks to this video from Silent Five Media's Chris Talbott of the track "You'll Disappear" live at The Rivington Lounge in New York City.

DJ Scratch'n Sniff's Favorite Albums of the Year

The following is a list of my favorite 10 albums for this year. I didn’t listen to every album released this year, and I'm not saying that these albums bear some sort of historical impact on the world of music because they're on my list. Some I listened to more often than others. Some I just liked the better than others- Either way, here are my favorites from 2008 in no particular order:

The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement

This one brings a melancholy smile to my face. Took the unmistakable Arctic Monkeys sound and added arrangements reminiscent of classic 60’s britt pop.

Fav Tracks: Calm Like You, I Don’t Like You Anymore, The Chamber

The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing

Catchy, fast paced, playful. Very loud record for a 2 piece band. Definitely sat in my CD player longer than most records.

Fav Tracks: Shut up and Let Me Go, We Walk, Traffic Light

Does it Offend you Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into

Good for when I needed some heavy beats and 80’s influenced ballads.

Fav Tracks: We are Rockstars, Epic Last Song, Let’s Makeout

Los Campesinos! - Hold on Now, Youngster

Does the Arts and Crafts label ever disappoint? This record reminded me that Indie rock doesn’t have to take itself so seriously all the time.

Fav Tracks: Death to Los Campesinos!, Don’t Tell me to Do the Math(s), You!, Me!, Dancing!

Little Joy - Little Joy

Blends classic Strokes sound with Brazilian folk rhythms provided by Los Hermanos guitarist Rodrigo Amarante. Appealed greatly to my lounge and world music sensibilities.

Fav Tracks: Brand New Start, With Strangers, No One’s Better Sake

Kings of Leon - Only by the Night

Ahhh…Ok…I get it! Listened to this record 3 times straight on a road trip. This one finally made a believer out of me.

Fav tracks: Crawl, Sex on Fire, Manhattan, Closer, Use Somebody

Hot Chip - Made in the Dark

Mesmerized me with electro beats and haunting ballads like Whistle for Will and the title track, Made in the Dark. This is an album that definitely got me Ready for the Floor.

Fav Tracks: One Pure Thought, Shake a Fist, Hold On, Wrestlers

Bajofondo Tango Club – Mardulce

Gustavo Santaolalla proves his musical genious once again on collaborations with Elvis Costello, Gustavo Cerati, and Julieta Venegas.

Fav Tracks: Gran Guignol, Ya No Duele, Pa’ Bailar (Siempre Quiero Mas)

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

Made me long for my days as a wide eye coed and inspired me to dust off that old cardigan. Yacht Rock soothes the savage beast.

Fav Tracks: Walcott, M79, Oxford Comma, The Kid’s Don’t Stand a Chance

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

The perfect soundtrack to a year that seemed an endless psychadelic trip. Wouldn’t have made it out alive without this album. You can hear so many musical influences in this record and they are executed masterfully. Wow-e-wow wow!

Fav Tracks: Solid from Start to Finish!

Honorable Mentions:

Born Ruffians – Red, Yellow, and Blue

Delta Spirit – Ode to Sunshine

Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles

Black Kids – Party Traumatic

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

FoundTrack's Fall '08 Collection (Track 16/20) - Woolfy - Odyssey

Woolfy - Odyssey (Track 16/20)
Album - Odyssey 12" (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Rong
http://www.myspace.com/woolfys

Simon "Woolfy" James is an L.A. transplant via London, growing up in a musical pedigree from pops, who managed Yes, The Bee Gees, Desmond Dekker, and the Stranglers to name a few. Obviously influenced by his father's clientèle, it is no wonder that Woolfy put his paw on the needle to make musical footprints all over the LA scene as a DJ in the early 90's, opening for such acts as DJ Krush, Antibalas, and Jurassic 5. In 2000 Woolfy would have a chance meeting with multi-instrumentalist Dan Hastie (Breakestra, Orgone, Lions) in a little pub in the valley, which Woolfy now owns, and together they would form an 8-yr musical collaboration called Projections, which recorded material fusing live instrumentation with sampled breaks and beats from their favorite 70's funk and rare groove records. After a few successful releases on Guidance recordings and some collaborations with Plantlife and the Pharcyde, Woolfy met DJ Spun of NY's Rong Records, and they began releasing his solo work on the new Rong/DFA imprint, including the 12" single for our featured "Odyssey", a crafty-cosmo funk cut with a perfect dose of soul.

Woolfy has just released the latest from his Projections project, The Astral Projections of Starlight on Germany's Permanent Vacation. Here's a little preview with "Neeve", what sounds like part 3 of Another Brick in the Wall.

neeve.mp3 - Woolfy

Make sure to have a pint at his Canoga Park Pub, the Scotland Yard, in honor of their 20-year anniversary. Cheers.

FoundTrack's Fall '08 Collection (Track 15/20) Monsters Are Waiting - Don't Lie

Monsters Are Waiting - Don't Lie (Track 15/20)
Album - Ones and Zeros EP (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Kanine
http://www.myspace.com/monstersarewaiting

Monsters are Waiting are an indie rock duo from Echo Park consisting of Annalee Fery (vocals, keys) and Andrew Clark (guitar, bass). They were originally a four-piece when they formed in 2005, but have since downsized to dos...Damn you economy. The band's change coupled with Annalee's pregnancy has kept Monster fans waiting as well, but this past Fall saw the release of a new 6-track EP on Kanine Records, including our featured "Don't Lie" in addition to a Monster rendition of the Stone Roses' classic "I Wanna Be Adored". V and I got a chance to check out the band's infectious haunt-rock this past summer at the final installment of Fridays off the 405 at the Getty Center in a highly anticipated return to stage before a local-crowd. Annalee's breathy, dreamy vocals, similar in style to Blonde Redhead's Kazu Makino, served as a suitable companion to Andrew Clark's shoe-gaze drift-riffs on guitar while enchanting visuals were projected behind the full band. Check out the video below for the title track from the Ones and Zeros EP.

To get to know Annalee's green thumb and the Geico gigs she lands when she's not rocking it out on stage in this interview with PLAYBOY for their Woman on the Verge series.
