Happy Halloween! - Creepy Horror Photography by Joshua Hoffine

Happy Halloween party people! Checkout these amazing images by photographer Joshua Hoffine. According to his personal website, he is inspired by fantasy, horror and Disney films, and obviously digs shooting with high production value. Combining interesting sets, special FX makeup, amazing lighting and elemental effects such as fog, Hoffine creates ridiculously stylized and vivid images. I'm a huge fan of photography with cinema like production value, so Joshua's photos hit it out of the ball park for me. Have a wicked Halloween tonight folks, and until then enjoy these imagse. Prints can be purchased on the artist's site:

"Towards Darkness" aka "Hacia La Oscuridad" on HBO & Showtime

"Towards Darkness," is the debut film by FoundTrack Friend, Director and Screenwriter Jose Antonio Negret . The film's conceptualization began as a final project for the Director while attending the University of Southern California's prestigious School of Cinema Arts. "Towards Darkness," is a dark and gritty (think "24") depiction of the kidnapping crisis that plagues the country of Colombia (and various other Latin American countries)- An issue that Antonio Negret knows all too well. "The film is a very personal film, which strives to open people's eyes to what is going on in Colombia," says Colombian-born Director Antonio.

Synopsis: The son of a Colombian banker, photographer José (Roberto Urbina) lives abroad in New York . While visiting his family back home for the Christmas holidays, he is reunited with a streetwise old flame (America Ferrera ,) and reacquainted with the casual violence that mars his country. Within days of his return, José is beaten and kidnapped, his captors demanding an exorbitant ransom from his parents. (MovieWeb)

The criminal practice of kidnapping was first introduced in modern Colombian history during the early 1970s by the guerrilla movements and, later, also by criminal groups. With the release of Colombian presidential candidate Íngrid Betancourt on July 2, 2008 this practice gained worldwide notoriety. (Wikipedia)

The practice of kidnapping has evolved and become a more common way for various underworld organizations and individuals to extort money from victims. It is so widely used that the rise in kidnapping cases has increased drastically. In the year 2000 alone, the number of kidnapped people in Colombia rose to 3572.

"Towards Darkness" or it's Spanish translation, "Hacia La Oscuridad," is a bi-lingual film that is shot in both English and Spanish, with English subtitles- A move that I consider groundbreaking. Groundbreaking because it speaks to a large portion of the population in the United States that still lacks representation in the entertainment industry. The U.S. is home to more than 45 million Hispanics, making it the world's second-largest Spanish-speaking community, only after Mexico and behind Colombia, Spain, and Argentina. Roughly half of all U.S. Spanish speakers also speak English "very well", based on the self-assessment Census question respondents (Wikipedia). That is a large number of individuals that communicate using both languages in their daily interaction, and yet there are no films that use the mixture of the two languages. Antonio may be a step ahead of the rest on this and I look forward to seeing more bi-lingual films in the future by this Director/Screenwriter.

Trivia: What do both Antonio Negret and America Ferrera have in common? I will tell, both are bi-lingual in English and Spanish and both attended the University of Southern California. The two were actually classmates.

"Towards Darkness" or "Hacia La Oscuridad," is currently on HBO and Showtime this month and is a definite must see. You can watch it anytime through HBO's and Showtime's On Demand Service. Check out the trailer!

FoundTrack's Fall '08 Collection (Track 2/20) - Ladyhawke - Back of the Van

Ladyhawke - Back of the Van (Track 2/20)
Album - Ladyhawke (Out 11/18/08)
Label - Modular
http://www.myspace.com/ladyhawkerock

Ladyhawke is the stage name of New Zealand singer songwriter Phillipa "Pip" Brown. In High School Pip played lead guitar in the grunge band Two Lane Blacktop and just two days before they were to support Australia's The Modey Lemon en route to an invitation to SXSW, the singer and drummer had both quit the band. Pip decided to take the flight to Australia anyways with an empty aisle and window seat accompanied by just her suitcase and guitar. She would end up befriending Nick Littlemore (Pnau) in Sydney and they played together for a few yrs in the band Teenager before Pip would focus on a personal project she had been developing for some time, a persona dubbed "Ladyhawke", named after the Rutger Hauer film from the 80's starring Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeifer. The project is greatly influenced by the music of this time, giving listeners a feeling of nostalgia despite having first heard her music. Memories of Pat Benetar were instantly evoked upon listening to the first track "Magic" off her forthcoming self-titled release, which Pip arranged and plays all on her own.

Our featured "Back of the Van" refers to her own memories touring in the back of an old clapped out Van called Cherry and driving through the night with her smelly bandmates from Two Lane Blacktop once they were developing quite a following in NZ. Check out the her video below, directed by Kinga Burza.

Ladyhawke also has an affinity 80's arcade games as well. That's why she's offered for us fans to play the Ladyhawke arcade game for free- check it out here http://www.ladyhawkemusic.com/game/

The Ascot Revival

Earlier this year I came across an older gentleman wearing what I believed to be a scarf under his button-down shirt. The scarf really complimented his button-down shirt and gave the outfit (which would have normally been average) some flare. The fabric of the scarf appeared to be silk and the colors were dark & rich...it really caught my eye. After speaking with the man, I was informed that the scarf was an “Ascot.” An ascot tie, or ascot, is a form of necktie, descended from the cravat which was widely worn in the early nineteenth century, made of linen and elaborately tied around the neck.

In the 1940’s, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn and various other actors were commonly pictured wearing ascots both in formal and casual attire. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s the ascot made a comeback. Hollywood stars such as Al Pacino, Michael Caine and Michael Butler were men spotted rockin' this accessory. In The Godfather II (1972), Al Pacino’s character, Michael Corleone, is pictured wearing an ascot in a few scenes throughout the movie, referencing the appeal of the ascot during the period. Recently, Jeremy Piven made an attempt to revive the look in 2006. During his Emmy acceptance for best supporting actor, the Entourage star wore a navy blue ascot under a white-button down shirt and navy sports coat. I think he wore it well.

My encounter with the ascot sparked a quest to add one to my fly arsenal of apparel. Finding one proved to be a bit more difficult than I expected. Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom’s, Brooks Brothers and The Men’s Warehouse were stores I thought would carry the accessory. Unfortunately for me, none of them offered a selection of ascots. During a visit to San Francisco I came across an upscale boutique specializing in men’s formal fashion called The Custom Shop Clothiers. As soon as I stepped into the spot, my eyes were immediately greeted by a mannequin dressed in a white button-down shirt, black sports coat and a dark purple & black ascot. Needless to say, I bought it!

An ascot is a great accessory that can easily dress up any outfit. Draw attention to yourself and your gear this fall/winter season with an ascot, it’s a good substitute for the average scarf. It adds the little extra flare to take your outfit from ordinary to bangin'. Interested in adding one to your collection....your best bet is going online! Ascots range in price from about $58-$125, depending on the quality of silk, pattern and type. Are you a creative person? Do you have what it takes to make your own? If you think you got the skills, save yourself some money during the economic crunch and peep out this cool link that shows you how to make a retro-ascot necktie!

Do you already own an ascot but are unable to figure out how to tie one? Well bring it out of the closet, dust it off and take a look at these simple instructions on how to tie one.

NBA star gets hustled across the pond

Although I am personally not a basketball fan, I love this story about the amateur b-ball player taking on professional NBA star Devin Harris on a court in South London last week. Harris was in town with the Nets for a game against Miami Heat on Sunday in the 02 arena in Greenwich London. He was taking part in a coaching session in Stockwell, when the personal trainer/basketball coach Stuart Tanner showed Harris a thing or two on the court - watch below...

Aussies are Awesome - Spotlight on Meijin Bruttomesso

One of our favorite rock nerds, Meijin Bruttomesso, has been a writer on the storm as of late, striking great review after great review with her passionate penchant for good music. Recently, she's rapped up SD's street scene, LA's detour and now the Cut Copy/Presets show in Pamona. Here's an excerpt from her recently published article for All Access Magazine cut copied and pasted below.

"It has been a busy time for Melbourne, Australian natives Cut Copy. Their explosive emergence on to the North American music scene over the past couple years has blossomed with the release of their second full-length album In Ghost Colours. Having their first US television appearance on October 1, 2008, on NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly, Cut Copy, alongside fellow electro-rockers from the outback, The Presets performed on October 3, at the all-ages Glasshouse in Pomona, a “warm-up” for their appearance at the much larger LA Detour Festival the following day. Reminiscent of a Western ghost town, Pomona seemed like an unusual locale for these Aussie artists, yet the crowds traveled far and wide for the sold-out show, one of many on their tour."

"Universal Mind Control" music video - Common ft. Pharrell

WOW, two Hype Williams videos that I've actually really liked in the past year?! (the other being this one)... what's happening to me? Here's the rad new video to Common's "Universal Mind Control" featuring Pharrell. Toussaint from Bedtime for Toys brought up a good point that this track's a must have gym jam for your workouts. Movie Trailer Mondays - "Push" Trailer

"Push" by director Paul McGuigan has been getting a lot cult buzz ever since clips from the film were screened earlier this year. The film features a cast of characters that have various special abilities that are hunted down by a government group that also possess such abilities. While this may sound like a pretty generic concept thats been seen a million times over in films such as X-Men and The Matrix and tv shoes like Heroes, "Push" manages to do so in a very unique, and moreover, stylish manner.

(special powers or not, Dakota is creepy deepy)

The film stars Chris Evans (the only funny thing in the Fantastic 4 movies), the ever creepy Dakota Fanning, and Djimon "Maximus' Buddy" Hounsou. This trailer starts off a bit generic, but gets really cool as it progresses:

David Fincher's Nike Football Commercial, "Fate"

I love seeing artists step out of their usual channels and produce work in other categories. In this case, Nike (and a lot of their cash) got director David Fincher (soon to be Oscar buzzin' with his upcoming "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") to direct an ad entitled "Fate" for their Football line. The piece is not only directed by Fincher, but shot by one of my favorite Cinematographers, Emmanuel Lubezki (of "Children of Men" fame). To add one last bit of cinema-world goodness to this commercial, the music is a remixed version of a track from famed Spaghetti Western composer Ennio Morricone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" score.

"Fate" follows the lives of two football players lives from the womb to the NFL- one of them being USC Trojan alumni Troy Polamalu, the other being LaDainian Tomlinson:

Obama and McCain roast each other @ Al Smith Charity Dinner

Everyone's favorite contenders in the electoral ring Barack Obama and John McCain had a rare lighthearted moment as they took turns roasting each other at the annual Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation dinner. Funny stuff in here and definitely more entertaining than their last debate (almost as funny as McCain's return to Letterman after bailing on him)- Definitely worth your time and some festive Friday afternoon laughs:

Shades of Greige Fall/Winter 08 Collection Jackets

(Waxed Belted 4 Pocket Officer's Jacket)

Shades of Greige was founded by 26 year old California designer Micah Cohen in 2007 and has since gathered a strong following. The brand's clothes tend to be tailored well, fit well and are simple with enough flare to make them stand out. Sounds like a bang up combo to me... AND they're priced pretty reasonably. Checkout these new fall/winter 2008 jackets- I want that one above as my "I don't really need it because I live in LA, but I'll justify it by saying I need it for my annual trip to NY" jacket. You can score your own at Context.

Music Profile- Vampire Weekend

By now most of you have already heard of Vampire Weekend. The indie pop/rock band composed of four Columbia university alumni first came on the scene in 2006. The band gained major popularity via the Internet and in November of 2007 toured the UK with the Shins. If you have not heard of them yet, they are a definitely a group worthy of your attention.

Their self titled debut album Vampire Weekend is fun & lively, nostalgic to the 80's. Their music has been described as a fusion of Ska, New Wave and Afro-Pop (African Pop), others have categorized it as Indie-Pop of a different cut with their worldly blend. Regardless of what genre you categorize them under, their music is a mixture of various influences and easily appeals to a large audience. Simply put Vampire Weekend is just that simple, witty and addicting, leaving you craving for more good times.

I had the pleasure of seeing Vampire Weekend at the Wiltern Theater. Their final show on Thursday September 18th was SOLD OUT and it's no wonder why. If you have the opportunity to check them out live, I highly recommended doing so. Vampire Weekend is a great live band. Everyone in the audience was on their feet moving to the infectious sound that takes a hold of you. The sound was crisp and clear and Ezra Koenig's voice is classic. I left the concert and immediately put on their album for the ride home....I didn't want the party to stop!

Vampire Weekend: Ezra Koenig (lead vocals, guitar), Rostam Batmanglij (keyboard, guitar, vocals), Chris Tomson (drums) and Chris Baio (bass guitar).

Some of my favorite tracks off the album are "Mansford Roof," "Oxford Comma," "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," and "I Stand Corrected." For another solid tune not found on their record, check out their cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere", taken from a recent radio session on Australia's Triple J.

A Preview of tonight's Presidential Debate (and, RIP Neal Hefti 1922-2008)

FoundTrack's favorite NY contributor Gill Bumby just sent us this little preview of tonight's Presidential Debate. Enjoy, and feel free to place Obama and McCain into either the Penguin or Batman roles as you see fit... though the real question is whether Biden or Palin is Robin?:

And in related Bat-news, we're sad to report that composer and jazz trumpeter Neal Hefti, the musician behind the "Nana na na na na na BATMAN!" AND "Odd Couple" theme songs has passed away. In remembrance of him, here's the classic tune:

Woolfy Record Release Party at Little Temple

Woolfy, who's "Odyssey" is featured on our Fall collection, will be performing with Projections at a special record release show at the Little Temple this Wednesday before he tours overseas. I got the pleasure of hearing his set amidst Malibu's sea at Moonshadows a few weeks back and i couldn't stop moving. He started Projections in 2000 with Dan Hastie, who you may know from his work with two of LA's best funk bands, Breakestra and Orgone. Woolfy's deep rooted disco, electro-funk has found a home on quality imprints like NY's Rong Music, Germany's Permanent Vacation and DFA. Here's a new single off of his forthcoming record.

Movie Trailer Monday - "Transporter 3"... wait... really?

So I noticed I've posted "Oscar hopeful" films the past couple weeks on Movie Trailer Mondays, so I decided to switch things up and provide some good ol' wholesome and brainless fun times for all. The new trailer to "Transporter 3" has been released, and it looks like it continues the tradition of insane car chases, and over the top fight scenes the franchise is known for. Dapper tough dude Jason Statham is back as the driver, and this time has to deliver a package so valuable that he's forced to wear a wrist bomb that will go off if he gets too far from his car (the signature Audi is back, but unfortunately it isn't this model). OH, and I forgot to mention one thing- the awesome Robert Knepper who plays the homicidal maniac "T-Bag" on Prison Break (my #1 guilty pleasure on TV) plays the villain in Transporter 3 as well... should be pretty creepy:

Now sit back, turn off your brain and enjoy:

And here's a little something from the "About Us" section of Gallery 1988. I fully endorse and support their "glorious year of 1988" inspired brand identity- make sure to click the following to enlarge and enjoy:
