What "A Strange Arrangement," is the name of the album by Mayer Hawthorne - a fitting title to the type of music Mr. Hawthorne creates. The first time I heard it, I wasn't sure what I was listening to. The music had that classic motown sound but the video was too contemporary and a white dude was singing. My initial thought was it was a spoof video, some random guy singing along to an old classic Motown song I never heard before. Then I payed closer attention to the lyrics and they were too current. So I did some research and discovered Mayer Hawthorne was creating something new yet paying homage to an old classic sound - call it Vintage Music. His album is one of my favorites and is on repeat on my iPod. Take a listen and you'll soon be singing along to the catchy hooks and upbeat music.
The Broken Bells have just announced a few more domestic dates in March and make a much anticipated return to Los Angeles after their debut performance at The Bootleg Theater last week.Tix to their March 14th date at The Troubadour go on sale at 1pm PST. Their NY show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on the 10th of March has already sold out so you can expect the LA show to sell out in the time it takes you to watch an episode of What's Happening!! Speaking of which, I've been getting a lot of requests to provide private links to share the videos i took from their debut performance, which were removed from Youtube at the request of their label Sony. I WILL NOT SHARE any of these videos and the reason can be found in a very special episode/Rerun of What's Happening!!! feat. live performance from The Doobie Brothers. See video below, referred by EJL.
If you're not able to score tix out here they will have a couple dates in Europe next week and then will be heading over to Austin, TX for SXSW after their LA performance....and don't underestimate the possibility of a Coachella addition in April. Their debut album comes out on the 9th of March. "Vaporize" and "The High Road" are now available for a free download with every preorder!
Tonight, we will witness half a dozen fine prime-time quintessential sitcoms involving themes of death, cast members getting backhanded across the room by drunken guest Stars (hint hint-rhymes with Lom Ganks)..., prostitution, surreal dream sequences by Alex P and much more as "very special episodes" get way too specialized. Come one, come all and share laughs since the in-studio audience was forbidden to during the recording. Our favorite example is below courtesy of Youtube's chrono2300 with a special remix edit featuring Le Tigre's version of "I'm so Excited".
To get YOU so excited/scared for tonight's main event, we've included a special party favor from the episode in which this takes place.
The electromagnetic British supa-star Dan Black is about to land on the west side of his brief US tour in support of the recently released full-length debut, ((UN)), through the Paris/NY based The Hours. Dan will be performing tonight at Dim Mak's Tuesday night weekly at Cinespace (Flier on right) and then one last Los Angeles stop at Spaceland for their Club NME Wednesday series. "Symphonies", the string-laden masterpiece with Kid Kudi, is featured on HBO's impressive "How to Make it in America - The Mixtape"... speaking of mixtapes, Dan is eating one above but has made sure to make digital copies of Weird Science, his own lil' experiment mixing DNA strands of hits by Kate Bush/Madonna/Henryck Gorecki, Busta Rhymes and the Boss in the Dan Black bunsen burner. It's available for Download right here. Below is the video for the aforementioned "Symphonies" sans Kid Kudi but with the best motion picture title exhibitions I've ever seen. Thanks to FoundTrack's resident Voice-Over Mixtape Introducer Tatonka for hipping us to this way back when.
United by Sound (UBS) is the LA duo of Jeni Ivey & Timo Ceniceros. UBS has been around for a minute (AKA several years) but the songs on their myspace look pretty fresh and i agree with the bands tongue in cheek bio that it make my ears look better.
They opened for Little Dragon back in '08 so i'm assuming they've spent a majority of this past year working on new material. Hopefully their FREE show tonite (11pm) with a full band at The Bootleg as part of Red Arrow Messenger's residency will be a sign of things to come. Flier down below.

- You can hear Jason Bentley break secrets on the debut performance from Broken Bells, the highly anticipated collaboration between Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) and James Mercer (The Shins)....
... And therefore, I was able to procure a handful of tix to the sought-after showcase at LA's best new venue, The Bootleg Theater of the FOLD Booking group. Tix were sold out less than an hour after the announcement last Friday morning. The response to a few floating singles on the internet has been more than complimentary and apparently that was only the tip of the iceberg as James Mercer seemed befuddled when hearing the crowd sing lyrics to music that's never been performed to the public. They played the entire self-titled effort live in sequence and then a curtain call from the insatiable fans brought the James and Brian back for an encore including a cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" and then the rest of their full 6-piece setup for the grand finale, a cover of the 60's hit by Tommy James & the Shondells, "Crimson and Clover". See video below and ten others in chronological order at the FoundTrack youtube page.
UPDATE - The videos have been removed due to copyright infringement. I hope some of you were able to enjoy what we experienced last Friday. Please do what you can to see these guys live and buy their self-titled debut on March 9th through Sony.
Upcoming Tour Dates 3.1 - Paris, FR @ Nouveau Casino 3.3 - London, UK @ ICA 3.17 - Austin, TX @ Stubbs (SXSW) < ---- with Spoon, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, & The Walkmen
Last night I happened upon a Culver City collective at the Hotel Cafe just after witnessing the disappointing Laker loss on one of the biggest screens I've ever seen. Bikos, which rhymes with Meepos, you know..the island where Balki Bartokomous (Perfect Strangers) hails, was personally responsible for lifting my spirits with their high-energy eccentric rock and roll. Unfortunately a late weekday billing at 11pm left a scant number of spectators at the hotel ; however, we were all treated to a great exhibition ending in a rush to inherit their free demos. Their charming set culminated with a few solid cuts including the epic "That Is Mine" that I'm looking so forward to hearing on their forthcoming LP later this Spring, which i should add is getting some mixing from Beck's engineer of choice. Lead singer Gabriel Pearlman shouty vocals reminded me a bit of Eddie Argos (Art Brut) but coupled with Miki Burton's vox they give off a bit of the vibe of the Friedberger siblings (Fiery Furnaces), Los Campesinos or a new indie rock version of the b-52's. Each member in the sextet are outstanding in their own right, including accomplished bassist Dave Jones (Magnolia Thunderpussy/SST), Daniel Hur on lead guitar, Jaron Halmy alternating between the piano and keys, and Austin Wester on the drums. Their proclivity in shifting rhythms and time signatures over each composition is great. Catchy hits "You Want It", and "Make Your Sound Sound" has been getting a lot of play on KXLU's Demo-listen. Bikos has a number of shows lined up in the next few months, including their next in their hometown at the Cinema Bar on March 18th.
The Cairo Gang are led by singer-songwriter Emmett Kelly (pictured top with the sweet epcot center shirt) who used to play with Beth Orton and guested on Will Oldham's (Bonnie Prince Billy) "The Letting Go" ; The Cairo Gang take their name from the British intelligence agents that were sent to Dublin during the Anglo-Irish war. The gang had an impressive self-titled debut in '06 through Narnack that was revered by Pitchfork. UPDATE - They were scheduled to play with Crooked Cowboy and Johnny O'Donnel tonite at the echo (flier on the right). However, they are in Europe supporting Cleveland's Baby Dee and the release of their new 7" "Holy Clover" through the UK label Tin Angel Records. They should be back in Cali in the spring. Meanwhile, head over to their myspace to check out a great new batch of deep soft rock in the vein of of Magnolia Electric Company/Kings of Convenience/J. Tillman (Fleet Foxes).
Oklahoma native Audra Mae's got a voice that rocks you gently with a sweet country twang. After moving to LA, she hustled and bustled around town, performing at various clubs before garnering the attention of LA based indie, SideOne Dummy. She gained considerable recognition after covering Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" in an episode of Sons of Anarchy and has also penned songs for Susan Boyle. Audra's currently working on her debut album with producer Ted Hutt (Flogging Molly, Gaslight Anthem, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones), which will be a stripped-down acoustic affair. Until then, you can find some gems in her digital Haunt EP.
Audra's in the middle of a slew of LA dates including a special acoustic evening tonite at La Brie's, formerly known as The Scene Bar in Glendale. She will be performing along with Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters. If you don't get a chance to see her tonite she's performing in one week (Feb. 25th) at the Bootleg Theatre along with another one of our favorite singers Jennifer Furches (Spring Summer).
