Sui Generis x San Francisco

We are but a blank canvas and fashion is the paint we use to add color to ourselves and our lives! Without fashion life would be rather boring. With that said, fashion is something I love and high fashion is something that I like to indulge in from time to time - yet with the price tag that comes along with high-end garments and the pace at which things become outdated - one could easily go broke chasing the latest and greatest.

While on a recent trip to San Francisco, I was introduced to a store called Sui Generis - what a surprise I found there! Sui Generis is similar to Crossroads Trading or Buffalo Exchange - in the sense that they are a new and recycled retailer. These types of retailers offer great selection at half the price. Yet, let me stress that I use the word "similar." What sets Sui Generis apart from the other two similiar retailers is the quality of the pieces they choose to select and the manner in which they present their selections. Miguel Lopez and Gabriel Yanez have a great eye for fashion! Let me restate that, they have a sixth sense for fashion! Whether you are walking past their intriguing store window display or standing in the middle of their exquisite store amazed by all the splendor - you can feel the passion they have for the art.

During my visit I had to pick up an item - these Prada pants were speaking to me so I had to answer yes!, when they asked me to take them home!

If you are in the San Francisco area do not leave without making a stop @ Sui Generis! Don't take my word for it - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom sent a letter to Sui Generis congratulating Miguel Lopez and Gabriel Yanez on winning The Best of the Bay Award 2009 for Best Mens Clothing Boutique!!!

Foodie Fridays: San Francisco Edition

For this special edition of Foodie Fridays, we're taking a tour of the diverse San Fran foodie scene with guest hosts Nass and Lana. Make sure you have this thorough roundup readily available on your next trip up to the Bay. Take it away, Nass and Lana...

Hip, hip, hooray for the San Fransisco Bay! Last month, FoundTrack homegal Lana and myself set off on a business trip up north. And by business, we mean stopping by all of the businesses below to get our munch on. On our way to SF, Lana gave me a great insider's guide to St. Helena, a charming town near Napa Valley where she spent her college years. St. Helena is definitely worth a detour if you're ever planning to check out California's famed wine country. Below are some of the best spots we hit up on the Main Street strip.

- Giugni's Grocery Co. - Might be the best sandwich I've ever had, seasoned with their signature Giugni juice, which makes for a great gift and gives Bay Cities Deli a run for it's money.
- Woodhouse Chocolates - Handpick your own custom box of chocolates.
- Taylor's Refresher - NorCal's version of In-N-Out with more variety and less locations. Try the White Pistachio shake and make sure to chill out in the beautiful back patio. (Pictured at left)
- Villa Corona - The mouth-watering bean and cheese burrito with chicken was one of our favorites.
- Ad Hoc - Thanks to Lana's OpenTable reservation, we scooped seats at the famed Thomas Keller restaurant in the neighboring town of Yountville.

If You're Going........to San...Fran...Cisco!!!

Pizzeria Delfina

We kicked off our Foodie forage in the city at Pizzeria Delfina. With a line out the door and a smell to adore, we opted out of our reservation at its upscale parent partner next door and waited with impatient excitement to get our hands on not one, not two but three of these pies. We savored the tastes of their Margherita, Salsiccia and Prosciutto pizzas—with a lovely wine pairing of course—as we devoured them on the sidewalk of the charming Mission neighborhood. Think of this as the SF equivalent to LA's Pizzeria/Osteria Mozza.

Candybar

As if indulging in pizza and wine weren’t enough hedonism for one night, our sweet tooth guided us to our next chomping ground, motivated purely by it’s namesake: Candybar!, San Francisco’s first dessert lounge located in the Western Addition neighborhood. From local art deco along the walls to impressionistic presentations on your plate, you almost feel guilty eating something so beautiful….NOT! We felt not one ounce of guilt as we tag-teamed both their coconut cream cheese frosted red velvet cake and their hazel and pinenut crusted apple a la mode with cream cheese & caramel filling.

Yank Sing

One cannot visit the Bay without sampling the d-lish dim sum delights San Fran has to offer. Not wanting to waste our time on some MSG’d out dive (which most of the time are the best!) we decided (with recommendations from local SF taxi driver natives) to visit Yank Sing. This un-pretentious James Beard award winning dim sum establishment had us singing their praise with food so juicy, mouthwatering, and droolingly delicious, without being greasy. The only problem was that our eyes expanded far bigger than our stomachs as we slurped their famous house soup dumplings while gesturing at a million other things we couldn’t wait to consume. Our bill had more stamps than the postal service. Personally, we loved the shu mai—and oh my was it delicious,—and we also bowed down to the cha su bao. The bacon wrapped shrimp, onion pancakes, shrimp dumplings, egg custard, and sesame balls were all great as well. Not to mention their house black bean hot sauce (available for purchase) which has the unique ability to make everything taste better.

La Boulange

Bonjour! La Boulange! (Yet another recommendation from a taxi friend.) La Boulange is an amazing French café chain which serves an array of traditional pastries (which are out for sampling), organic breads, coffees, sandwiches, and desserts. Whether you are in the mood for something sweet or savory, for a little Bit O' France from the money in yo' pants, this place has something guaranteed to fit your fancy and tickle your pickle ; ) I must say their TARTs were off the CHARTs with such standouts as roasted cauliflower gratin, rustic apple, and goat cheese with fruit. Also, nobody can beat their tuna cheddar, which melts in your mouth AND in your hands so make like Lana (pictured right) and eat it fast…also their Almond Croissant has a fragile yet crisp shell and a soft and gentle core so spend some quality time with this one.

Honorable Munching
1) Blue Bottle Coffee - For fans of Intelligentsia, this one's for you. All we can say is, artisanal microroasting = great coffee and amazing hot chocolate...

2) Minamoto Kitchoan - The Tiffany's of Japanese delicacies, beautifully presented treats are shielded under glass casings to protect from foodieholics like us. (Pictured at left)

3) House of Nanking - Trust me, let your server order for you, it's worked for me the last two times I've visited. That should of course include sesame chicken with sweet potatoes, and delicious sweet tea with berries and rosebuds.

NEXT TIME on Foodie Fridays: The bánh mì battles may be in full swing, but we've picked our favorite: Viet Noodle Bar in Atwater Village.

Ticket Giveaway - Peter, Bjorn and John's 10th Birthday at Club Nokia

Although most of us were introduced to Peter, Bjorn and John's music from their catchy 2006 single "Young Folks", which happened to be the first track ever on our monthly mixtape series back in July 2006, the Swedish trio had already released two prior full-lengths at that point and had their first rehearsal back on November 21st, 1999.

This Saturday, they will round out a recently announced "Surprise Birthday Tour"on their actual 10th birthday as a band at LA's very own Club Nokia with their favorite Swedish singer El Perro Del Mar and LIGHTS ON, the San Diego band we championed on our Winter '09 Collection.

We are giving away a pair of tickets for this Saturday's show, open to all ages. To win, you need to be a current or new member of our FoundTrack Facebook fan page and tell us what your favorite song featuring whistling is (with the exception of "Young Folks" of course.) Just leave your entry on our wall or send us a message. The winner/song will be announced on Friday via the FoundTrack Facebook/Twitter pages and will get a shout out on our next podcast. You will be on the PB&J guestlist +1.

In case you miss out on the giveaway, tix are still available for purchase for the last three dates of the tour and they are also giving away tix on the PB&J twitter (just gave away 2 tix for their SD show for the first person to bust a twitpic of their arse). Each show in this special engagement series will feature one or several secret special surprise guests including dancers, singers, rappers, folkrock artists, jazz musicians, celebrities, stand-up comedians, magicians, etc... They had Spank Rock, Amanda Blank and others at their philly show...The band will play some rare old/brand new or never-before-heard songs with an amazing birthday light show from the award-winning light technician Ed Warren. There will be a whistling contest where the winners get to be onstage performing "Young Folks" with the band. Special Peter Bjorn and John merch items will be given away for free after the show and this will also be the last tour PB&J will make before going into the studio, so if you can't wait until 2011 then don't miss the party.

Upcoming Tour Dates:
11/19 @ Great American Music Hall - San Francisco, CA
11/20 @ Great American Music Hall - San Francisco, CA
11/21 @ Club Nokia - Los Angeles, CA (Actual 10-yr Birthday)

Also, Dance Right is Presenting the Peter, Bjorn and John Afterparty at Three of Clubs (Hollywood) with Brother Reade, Them Jeans and Bobby Evans to join a special DJ Set by Jaime (The XX). RSVP Required.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 18/22) - Maus Haus - Rigid Breakfast

Maus Haus - Rigid Breakfast (Track 18 of 22)
Album - Lark Marvels (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Pretty Blue Presents
http://www.myspace.com/maushausmusic

Maus Haus are a San Francisco sextet who obviously aren't photogenic, but have opened my eyes and ears to their experimental efforts of freaky electro post-rock on their debut full-length, Lark Marvels. Recorded over the last year in San Francisco, the album's 12 songs contain a variety of modes, often recalling rhythm-shifting 60s psych pop a la Captain Beefheart , krautrock, avant jazz, and a ramshackle of electronic sounds, all mastered by Roger Seibel (Tortoise, !!!, Coco Rosie, Pit er Pat, Elliot Smith). Our featured "Rigid Breakfast" brings to mind a liftoff into an underground labratory with an inception of a robot gone extremely bad. Here's to considering it.

Orange Peels (Record Release Party) at Bootleg Theatre

So if you're into happy music of the pop variety, Foundtrack friend Maxwell (Maximum Thrills/Viva Radio) helped set up a lil' show in LA for San Francisco band the Orange Peels at the Bootleg Theatre, 2220 Beverly Boulevard in Echo Park tonight at 9:30pm.

It's the Orange Peels album release show for their new record 2020, out now on Minty Fresh Records. The Orange Peels are led by Allen Clapp, who i was introduced to a year ago when i asked former FoundTrack contributor Dev about the meaning of the Twee music genre. Maxwell recommends you check out their finest record in 1994, "100% Chance of Rain" under the name Allen Clapp and His Orchestra. My personal favorite on that fine record is "Something Strange Happens".

The Corner Laughers are coming down with the Peels from San Francisco to support, bringing their ukulele-driven pop sound with them and new local buzzband Pearl Harbor are rounding out the lineup, led by Piper and Skylar (who's only 14!). Pearl Harbour make dreamy pop in the vein of Fleetwood Mac or so sez Pitchfork who recently gave them this review.

Ceravelo - Re-inspiring The Modern Gentleman

Hey FoundTrackee's!!! Eman from the FoundTrack Creative Crew here, sharing our newest project with all of you! I've been M.I.A. for a minute working on some other projects but am very happy to report back with a little personal news. The project below is a little special sauce I've been working on (with 2 other amazing individuals) for sometime now and is gaining momentum - Check It Out!

Who says chivalry is dead and men aren't quite the gentlemen of yester-years? Ceravelo is standing up and revoluting against that idea. They are re-inspiring today's Bloc to open doors for ladies, remove hats at the table and put on a coat when you go out to dinner! Ceravelo is an online, clothing accessory boutique based out of San Francisco, California. They specialize in creating custom, contemporary and originally designed ascots made from both re-purposed and new materials. In a time were people are more conscious of where they spend their "Dolla Dolla Bill," Ceravelo, keeps production locally within San Francisco. Not to be confused with Cervélo, the racing bike company, Ceravelo spawned from a combination of two names: Emmanuel Cervantes and Steven Arevalo. They came up with the concept and were inspired by a blog posting from this very site, Foundtrack.

Re-purposed material. What is it? Material that was once used for some other purpose and to which is given another life. Essentially, this means that the materials are rare and the ascots designs are one of a kind. The company guarantee's that the majority of the material they procure and use to design their ascots is re-purposed. The remainder comes by way of local distributors. The use of re-purposed material is not a substitute for perfection. Ceravelo’s mission is to prove that environmentally conscious design can be synonymous with sartorial fashion. Co-Founder - Steven Arevalo (pictured above) describes the collection, " Our style is timeless, classic and relevant. When you feel our product you will experience the quality and understand the care we take to precisely craft each ascot."

Ceravelo will be featuring their entire line of original, hand-made made ascots on December 1, 2011 at the Nordstrom in Hillsdale, Ca. Ceravelo will be featuring their entire line of original, hand-made made ascots on December 1, 2011 at the Nordstrom in Hillsdale, Ca. Make sure to say to our friends, The Ceravelo Team - Jackie Lopez (pictured below), Steven Arevalo and Emmanuel Cervantes. You can also check them out @ www.Ceravelo.com
