Billygoat

Portland duo of David Klein and Nick Wooley aka Billygoat make beautiful experimental music inspired by their carefully crafted stop-motion animation films. They will be showcasing both sound and picture in a one month tour with Little Dragon. They make two stops in LA, Friday at the Bootleg Theater and then Saturday at the SOLD OUT Little Dragon show at the echoplex. Full list of tour dates on their website. While touring, they will be releasing Dioscuri, a limited edition EP as an enchanced Audio CD (with a quicktime file of the animation)

The Italians Do It Better Tour has just started and they are making their way through LA this Friday, October 8th at Club 740 in Downtown.

Jay Electronica x Exhibit C

There are A LOT of "J's" in the rap game. Until now the most recognizable has been Jay-Z (drop the Z and we still know who you're talking about.) Well my friends that is all about to change. Jay Electronica - "F-that! Call me Jay ElecHannukah, Jay ElecYarmulke, Jay ElectRamadaan Muhammad Asalaamica RasoulAllah Supana Watallah through your monitor," has been creating some noise in the game since 2007 with his "Act 1: Eternal Sunshine." Then in 2008 he produced "Queens Get the Money," on the Nas album "Untitled." "Exhibit C," is the title of his latest work that has grabbed peoples attention once more!

"Exhibit C" is like listening to the late great Biggie Smalls, "Juicy" the first time it dropped. It's one of those tracks that makes you say, "Dude is about to BLOW UP!" Jay Electronica is a poet! His lyrics have you holding on to every word and stuck digesting the message well after the song is over - with lyrics that are heavily layered in meaning. The dude is NICE with it, both on and off the mic. This past Thursday I had the great pleasure of meeting the man at the MOS DEF show here in Hollywood @ the Key Club (MOS DEF has been taking Jay Electronica with him to perform. At the end of last year I caught their show at the Palladium). MOS was amazing as always. The kicker of the show was at the end when the DJ played the sample of "Exhibit C" and the crowd went BANANAS!!! Watching from the stage was a completely different experience - it was as if the crowd was awaiting a prophet speak and once he spoke it was as if the crowd was in a trance lipping each and every word spoken.

Jay Electronica's arrival has been long awaited by fans and Hip-Hop movers. "Nas hit me up on the phone said, What you waiting on? Tip hit me up with a Twit said, What you waitin on? Diddy sent me a text every hour on the dot sayin, When you gonna drop that verse Nigga you takin long!" Take a minute to listen to Exhibit C and tell me what you think! Can't get enough? Rey Fresco x The People

The Band "Rey Fresco" is definitely living up to their name - Translation: King of Cool!!! If you are not familiar it won't be long before you are - and the rest of the mainstream world. This SoCal reggae-rock quartet from Ventura, California are making their way to stardom. You really can't sum up a sound that is as eclectic as this and put it into a category. Their sound is a mixture of various influences that seem familiar to the ear and yet stands alone as something different. Regardless of what category you want to place their music - there is no doubt in my mind that when I am in the presence of these gentlemen, I am in the presence of stars!

I've heard the band on several occasions and let me tell you that their performances are body-moving! Whether it's playing at the local hangout, The Ventura Theater in their own backyard or The Wiltern in Los Angeles - the energy and vibe the band brings is electrifying. Bon Iver : At Sunrise - 9/27/09

Last Sunday morning as the summer had fell to fall, a puff of fog from a magic dragon named Bon Iver had descended to a field of dreams along with several hundred privileged fans, imposing over the house of the hippest place to die, The Hollywood Forever Cemetary. In getting ready for the slumber party, there was no sleeping bag necessary. After all...what's a good sleepover accompanied by a shut eye. Especially when live entertainment includes a mix of Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket", two carefully folked up playlists of new and old storytellers, a series of moving images of the "Planet Earth", blessings from Buddhist monks and of course, breakfast of champions with a 70 minute live performance of everything recorded by the curator as the sky changed light. I could review this unique experience for you but i'd rather share it through its sights and sounds.

Unfortunately, quite possibly my one shining moment of amateur bootleg concert videography of the last song was accidentally formatted/lost in space. Meanwhile, enjoy the video below taken at Bon Iver's outside lands performance in 2008. I know it's far from a close-up but there's a pretty lesson to be learned at the 2:40 mark for anyone that's interested in seizing the day.

Ximena Sariñana Rivera is a young (22yr old) both Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated Mexican singer/songwriter and actress. Her debut solo album Mediocre, was released mid 2008 - it's a collection of contemporary pop-rock/vocal jazz.

Ximena Sarinana is one of my favorite artist right now and I'm looking forward to hearing more out of her - perhaps an English album as she is multi-lingual. For her debut album she choose to record in her native tongue - Spanish. Fortunately music is one of those mediums like film that transcends the language barrier - no matter what language you speak, you can definitely appreciate the beauty and passion that comes out when Ximena sings.





Catch her tonight at the Avalon, show starts at 6:30pm - buy your tix at the door for $30. Monday she will be at SoHo in Santa Barbara giving another performance at 9pm. I'll see ya at the Santa Barbara show!

Run Run Run at Nicolby’s in Ventura, CA: Meijin's Live Show Review

On February 25, 2009, Nicolby’s (Club A.D.D), supporters of local and unsigned artists welcomed Run Run Run and openers In the Red to its stage. Located in downtown Ventura, California, the club’s external façade blends well with the surrounding shops' modern spin on a frontier feel. Ascending flights of carpeted stairs, club goers enter a sizable, neon-embellished space, highlighted by the stage, scattered bar tables with comfortable seating, an excellent selection of house music, and a well-stocked bar and friendly tender. At door-opening hour, Run Run Run treated early arrivers and bar hoppers to a sound check that previewed the two-storied venue’s quality acoustics.

Hitting the stage with their autograph swell of reverb and sirens, sporadic strobes, and bellowing smoke machines, Run Run Run surprised listeners by opening with a duo of freshly formulated tracks. “What You Are” and “Wishing Well” intermingled the best of RRR’s signature psychedelic sentiment and alternative rock angst into intricate instrument-vocal interplay. Continuing with their stellar cover of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You,” Rx3’s glimmering rotating stage lights ricocheted off the Nicolby’s hardwood dance floor. Run Run Run unveiled another of their latest compositions, “Uptown,” which stood out with infectious dance beats and funky guitar riffs which that contrasted with the more ominous and streamlined “On My Way.” The title track of their current EP and accompaniment to an artsy music video, “Good Company” sustained the band’s polished set:



“10,000 Feet,” the final preview of new tunes, launched into flowing melodies that surged with tension and dove into waves of distortion. The band returned to their 2007 release Endless Winter with the consistently grabbing “Wire,” elevating “Skyscraper,” and heart-rendering “Wait Up For You,” which is now available as a downloadable cell phone ringer, and their closer, a reformulated version of “Song and Dance.”

Run Run Run will head back into the studio to put finishing touches on their new tracks and lay down additional works. By summertime, an EP will be forthcoming.
