FoundTrack's July '08 Compilation (track 1/14) - Boy Genius feat. Tatanka - "Summer (ft intro edit)"

FT JULY '08 INTRO - Transcribed
"Welcome to the FoundTrack's July 2008 compilation. As we enter our third year we want to thank all of our listeners for their continued support and the artists on this compilation for allowing us to showcase their work. If you like what you hear this is just the tip of the iceberg. We encourage you to support these artists by purchasing their music. For more information stay tuned to FoundTrack.com. We have plenty in store this year and hope to serve as a resource to those who are willing to welcome us with open minds."

Introducing you to our 3rd year in the game is none other than FoundTrack friend for life Tatanka of National Geographic, whose vocal dexterity has provided the voiceover...over and over again ; taking on such roles as Little Superstar, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Vincent Price, Charles Bukowski, the Apple commercial dude, FoundTracula, your friendly neighbor Peter Parker, and most importantly himself (pictured above). He's so prolific I don't even think we could fit all of his work on one mixtape. In fact, i wouldn't be surprised if he was working on another voiceover project in the picture above despite tough reception in NY's underground. Many thanks goes to our reliable pal. We wouldn't have been able to make it this far without you.

Of course, it wouldn't have flowed so nicely without the beatmaster himself Boy Genius (Toussaint Hunt of Bedtime For Toys) laying down his "summer" jam. Outside of his work for the Toys of K-town, he is a producer prodigy and this is a mere sample of this boy's genius skills. If you're interested in any licensing opportunities don't be shy. Hit him up through the Bedtime For Toys MySpace page.

Stay tuned to the blog throughout this month for more features on the rest of the artists on our July Compilation

FoundTrack's January '08 Mixtape - Liner Notes (Tracks 9-11)

Track 9 - Waldeck - Memories
Album - Ballroom Stories (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Dope Noir Records
Release Date - 6/25/07
Founder - Chris Douridas - KCRW DJ

Comment - Viennese producer Klaus Waldeck re-creates the rich pursuit of pleasure lost after the world war in the speakeasy's of the early 20's and 30's with long-awaited full-length, "Ballroom Stories". This distinctive sound plays better on record ; that is the old grammophones and shellack recordings that assisted the authenticity in its recording. Waldeck dwells on offbeat rhythms such as swing and combines them with his old passion: dub & reggae. Zeebee is the featured new voice on "Ballroom Stories", writing 5 tracks including the featured "Memories".

Please drag Ballroom Stories to your Gatsby party playlist where "swing meets tango in a heavenly cocktail promising a life richer than the thick smoke of cuban cigars."-www.waldeck.at/

Here is a clip of a Mercedes advert which features "Make My Day", also featured on the new album.

Track 10 - Sam Sparro - Black and Gold

Album - Black and Gold
Label - Island
Release Date - March 31, 2008
Founder - Stereogum
www.myspace.com/samsparro

Sam Sparro is a 24 year old offering up a mix of funk, soul, electro and dance in the form of "Black and Gold" - a highly anticipated debut full-length that is already making this LA based musician a breakout artist for 2008. Originally from Sydney Australia, Sam and his fam moved to LA when he was ten years old, discovering his soulful voice in the Pasadena Chruch where his father was a minister. The kid made quite an impression on the churchgoers including Chaka Khan. After crafting his musicianship in England, Sam was re-discoverd in an LA venue sharing the stage with the Nightwatchman, and immediately after the show was signed by the Modus Vivendi indie label head Jesse Rogg.

Sam is currently wrapping up his Black and Gold debut this spring. We will keep you updated on his upcoming gigs but he is sure to receive lots of attention at SXSW and the Miami Winter Conference.

Track 11 - Ticklah - Si Hecho Palante
Album - Ticklah Vs Axelrod (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Easy Star
Release Date - 9/18/07
Founder - Pitchfork
www.myspace.com/ticklah

Ticklah AKA David Axelrod obviously feels that he is the only thing that can stop him these days, according to the title of his new album. As a founding member of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings as well as keyboardist for the afrobeat band Antibalas, Ticklah finds a rhythm between Jamaican reggae and Cuban mambo, combining ska trombone with Spanish vocals and tiny hints of dub. He plays keyboards, as well as drums, bass and guitar on this album. However, he gets by with a little help from his friends from the Easy Star All Stars as well as featured guest vocalist Mayra Vega on "Si Hecho Palante" which recalls the romantic expressionism of the great Omara Portuondo.

FoundTrack's January '08 MixTape - Liner Notes (Tracks 1-5)

Track 1 - Europe - The Final Countdown (Them Jeans/Anti MC Remix)

Album - Promo
Label - Promo
Release Date - Dec. '06
Founder - JJ (stilllistentogangstamusic.blogspot.com)

Comment - This track features a remix from AntiMC of Palmsoutsounds and Jason Stewart (AKA Them Jeans) of the Swedish glam metal band Europe's "The Final Countdown". The lyrics were inspired by David Bowie's song "Space Oddity". "The Final Countdown" was written to be an opening song for concerts but the band never in their wildest metal dreams thought it would be used as the synth riff to rally the Detroit Pistons crowd as they announce the starting lineups and now as the Foundtrack introduction to our January mixtape.

Speaking of introductions, hopefully one day the FoundTrack can commission the services of Detroit's John Mason.
Michael Buffer, eat your heart out.

What a difference a decade makes.

Track 2 - Dj Shadow - Six Days (Soulwax Remix)
Album - Most of the Remixes....(See picture below for full title) (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Parlophone
Release Date - 10/22/07
Founder - Dan Wilcox - KCRW DJ

Comment -To celebrate the release of the Radio Soulwax documentary called Part Of The Weekend Never Dies, Parlophone has helped compile (almost) all of the remixes the DJ duo has done over the past 10 years. The album's full title contains 545 characters of text, hence the "...". Full title may be read in the album artwork below or next time you're waiting over 30 min. on hold for a Time Warner customer service issue. FYI- this title is about 100 characters more than the Fiona Apple album When the Pawn, which was the previous record-holder before Most of the Remixes... The double-disc album features remixes of classics by the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, LCD Soundsystem, and of course this tasty mash-up of the B-52's "52 girls" and DJ Shadow's "Six Days".

Check out the mathwork for the soulwax mashup below.

Track 3 - Breakwater - Release The Beast
Album - Discovered: A Selection of Daft Punk Samples (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Rapster
Release Date - 11/20/07
Founder - Jack Catlin - DJ KnewJack

Comment - Discovered gives listeners the full versions of songs sampled for many of Daft Punk's biggest hits. It also acts as a stand alone compilation of disco jazz and funk from the collections of two of the most influential producers in dance music. The compilation Includes the sources for "Around the World," "Robot Rock," "Harder Better Faster Stronger," and many more, including this beast from Breakwater. This tune reminds me of Edwin Starr's "War" as they both share the "hugh" sound effect of getting head-butted in the stomach by Tattoo from Fantasy Island.

Just see what IMEEM below

Track 4 - Katy Perry - Ur So Gay

Album - Ur So Gay EP (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Capitol
Release Date - 11/20/07
Founder - Mixtape Maestro
www.myspace.com/katyperry

Comment - Weather you love it or hate it, Katy Perry's un-PC "Ur So Gay" will leave an inevitable impression on you. Katy's the latest to follow the footsteps of the young female indie-pop fame and is slated to bring her debut full-length through capitol this spring. In the meantime, chew on this EP which features a cover of Outfield's 80's hit "Use Your Love". After hearing her bitter laundry list of complaints in "Ur So Gay", make sure to use your love wisely.

Track 5 - Castledoor - The Birds and the Fleas
Album - Follow the Dove EP (Sample/Purhase)
Label - None
Release Date - 7/25/06
Founder - Amoeba Music
www.myspace.com/castledoormusic

Comment - This LA sextet is Kevin Bronson's (LA Times Buzz Bands columnist) favorite new band, earning its DIY-cred by playing dozens of shows in Eastside clubs, winning hearts with its exuberant boy-girl harmonies and layered guitars and keyboards. The band also just finished recording an EP, "Shoutin' at Mountains," with Earlimart frontman and Aaron Espinoza. - LAtimesblog

Check out their live show Jan. 31st @ Spaceland with Airborne Toxic Event and Deadly Syndrome.

Adele - Hometown Glory

Hometown Glory - Adele (pronounced uh-dell like the computer manufacturer)
Album: Nineteen
Label: XL
Release Date: 1/28/08 - UK release date (IMPORT)
Founder: Ranjini Kini

19 year old singer-songwriter Adele Adkins recently earned top honors on the BBC's annual "Sounds of 2008" poll conducted by nearly 150 of the UK's most influential music heads to forecast their favorite new acts you're certain to hear in the new year.

Her debut single "Hometown Glory" is a tribute to her hometown in London after her mother tried to convince her to move to Liverpool for University. I think she ended up making a wise decision as she matriculated* in the BRIT school of performing arts (London) whose alums include Kate Nash, Amy Winehouse, and Imogen Heap. This is where she honed her soft and sultry songwriting skills.

*first time using vocab word since SAT's ...yeah baby!

On the label's request we have been asked to remove Adele's "Hometown Glory" from the January '08 Mixtape. However, if you subscribe to her mailing list you will receive a free MP3 live version of "Hometown Glory".
