Jay Electronica x Exhibit C

There are A LOT of "J's" in the rap game. Until now the most recognizable has been Jay-Z (drop the Z and we still know who you're talking about.) Well my friends that is all about to change. Jay Electronica - "F-that! Call me Jay ElecHannukah, Jay ElecYarmulke, Jay ElectRamadaan Muhammad Asalaamica RasoulAllah Supana Watallah through your monitor," has been creating some noise in the game since 2007 with his "Act 1: Eternal Sunshine." Then in 2008 he produced "Queens Get the Money," on the Nas album "Untitled." "Exhibit C," is the title of his latest work that has grabbed peoples attention once more!

"Exhibit C" is like listening to the late great Biggie Smalls, "Juicy" the first time it dropped. It's one of those tracks that makes you say, "Dude is about to BLOW UP!" Jay Electronica is a poet! His lyrics have you holding on to every word and stuck digesting the message well after the song is over - with lyrics that are heavily layered in meaning. The dude is NICE with it, both on and off the mic. This past Thursday I had the great pleasure of meeting the man at the MOS DEF show here in Hollywood @ the Key Club (MOS DEF has been taking Jay Electronica with him to perform. At the end of last year I caught their show at the Palladium). MOS was amazing as always. The kicker of the show was at the end when the DJ played the sample of "Exhibit C" and the crowd went BANANAS!!! Watching from the stage was a completely different experience - it was as if the crowd was awaiting a prophet speak and once he spoke it was as if the crowd was in a trance lipping each and every word spoken.

Jay Electronica's arrival has been long awaited by fans and Hip-Hop movers. "Nas hit me up on the phone said, What you waiting on? Tip hit me up with a Twit said, What you waitin on? Diddy sent me a text every hour on the dot sayin, When you gonna drop that verse Nigga you takin long!" Take a minute to listen to Exhibit C and tell me what you think! Can't get enough? Want more, peep out Exhibit A & B!

Diz Gibran x Soon You'll Understand

Artist: Diz Gibran
Album: Crooks & Castles Presents: Soon You'll Understand
www.myspace.com/dizgibran
www.facebook.com/diz.gibran

The dudes at Crooks & Castles definitely knew what they were doing when they backed Diz Gibran," the LA Rapper who teamed up with New York producer "Moonshine" to produce the album - Soon You'll Understand. I'm definitely understanding and loving the 19 tracks that make up the album. The beats are soulful and melodic, the lyrics are positive and insightful - perhaps it's a reflection of who Diz compares himself to - "We kinda refer to ourselves as the new Gangstarr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, type of thing."

Keep your eyes open, you may just run into Diz around LA or at his skate shop on Fairfax - The Diamond Supply Co. Skate Shop. If you don't there is no question you soon will be hearing his "Voice on the Stereo."

Download and stream the album for FREE @ Diznmoon.com

The Good Life Reunion Show Tonight at House of Blues

This Is The Life (2008) explores the racial, social and musical implications of South Central Los Angeles' famed '90s Hip Hop venue The Good Life. The film features interviews with various members of Freestyle Fellowship, Project Blowed, Busdriver, Cut Chemist, Chali 2na, 2Mex, Pigeon John and others. Last night our friends at Space 15 Twenty kicked off their weekly Monday Night of music-related films curated by Amoeba with a screening of this very documentary in their courtyard with a follow-up Q&A session with director/producer Avu Du Vernay in celebration of the DVD release, which just hit shelves today. In case, you're like me and missed out, Amoeba has the transcription on their blog and their will be more screenings every night this week with special guests at the Downtown Independent Theater. Here's the official trailer of the film.

Tonight they're extending the celebration with a one-time only reunion performance from some of the heads that made that life so good, returning to the roots of this very special LA scene, this time at the House of Blues Sunset strip presented by our pal Dean Raissen and his enterprise Raise Up Entertainment. I can tell you now it's going to be bananas with featured guests including Cut Chemist, Chali 2Na, Abstract Rude, Pigeon John, Busdriver, 2Mex to name a few in addition to the charismatic MC Garth Trinidad and it only costs you 2 Lincoln bills ($10 pre-purchase that be) so get a move and get ready to dance all night.

Adam Bobrow makes "Ping Pong" and "Fresh" fit in the same sentence...

I never thought ping pong could be dope until I met our good buddy Adam Bobrow back in my college radio days at USC's KSCR. Every once in a while this funny dude would stop by our underground hip hop show and start busting freestyle raps in Yiddish, thus earning the MC name "Yid-One." It wasn't until a few years later that I could actually remember that he had a real name and this name was Adam Bobrow.
(Getting down with his "Balls of Fury" costar Christopher Walken. Adam was humble and made sure Walken got some screentime as well)

Adam is one of those funny dudes that everyone on campus seemed to know... crazy Trojan Spirit and I imagine if we were in high school together he would have been the mascot or the class clown or maybe both. Anyway a few years after graduating we started hanging out again and it turns out the dude is a renaissance man of sorts. He plays competitive Table Tennis (he actually refereed the Puma PT3 Tournament we covered a few months ago), performs standup comedy, acts (alongside Christopher Walken in "Balls of Fury" at that), AND he can bust a mad dance move. Mister Bobrow's got a great YouTube channel you should all checkout- To get started checkout this wacky video where the dude combines several of his talents and gets at it with some crazy excessive celebration:

(I've never met another Ping Pong Pimp that looks quite like this, and I doubt you have either)

N.A.S.A.'s Incredible "Way Down" Music Video featuring RZA, Barbie Hatch & John Frusciante

I've been waiting for this music video to be released for a while now! It's my favorite track off of N.A.S.A.'s debut LP "The Spirit of Apollo," and features a ferociously elegant collaboration between N.A.S.A.'s Squeak E Clean & Zegon, the RZA, Barbie Hatch and John Frusciante. The video is directed by Syd Garon and Sage Vaughn who were also responsible for the beautiful artwork. ENJOY!:

For more N.A.S.A. goodness, checkout this behind the scenes studio tour, featuring FoundTrack homie Squeak E Clean

Kid Cudi's "Day N' Nite" Music Video directed by So-Me

Super caliente music video director So-Me is back again with a seriously dope music video to Kid Cudi's single "Day N' Nite." Some of you might remember So-Me's style of signature motion-graphics heavy material in breakthrough videos for Justice including "D.A.N.C.E." and "DVNO" AND Kanye's "Good Life." Kick back and enjoy:

Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk x Jay-Z

"You draw, better be picasso, y'know the best." - Friend Or Foe
"Perfectly like a Picasso, Rembrandt and Rocco's." - Maybach Music
"Cop Rembrandts, hang 'em, pay the lot." - I Know What Girls Like

From the jump, Jay-Z has been giving props to the masters of the art world. Well the art world has returned the honor. The above piece of Jay-Z is done on canvas, instead of paint the artist choose to keep in the the tradition of Hip Hop and used LP's - that's right vinyl records!

The Jay-Z piece was on display at an exhibit in Downtown LA - every second Thursday of each month the art district in downtown opens up its doors to everyone for the event known as the Downtown Art Walk. The streets are filled with activity - commercial art galleries, museums and various art venues are open, street vendors and performers fill the sidewalks.

A FREE Art Walk shuttle moves visitors around the Gallery Row portion of the Downtown Art Walk from 6-10 pm. Pickups and stops are available on demand — just wave to the vehicle to stop or alert the driver to exit. The shuttle is a vintage retrofitted 1940s school bus, and is hosted by Kim Cooper and Richard Schave of Esotouric, who curate it as moving performance venues. The shuttle is called The Hippodrome. Shuttle performance schedules are here. The Art Walk Visa is now available! A great way to navigate the Downtown Art Walk using your smartphone or web enabled phone. *Note: I checked this out on my iPhone - i highly recommend it - navigate through the scene and act like you got the area on lock.

This artist mixes art, religion and pop culture to produce this piece. Cop it like Jay-Z cop's Rembrandts - price of shown piece $10,000 vs. price of Rembrandt etching $275,000!

Louis Vuitton x Kanye West Sneaker - Sneak Peak

"Everybody's got an addiction, mine is shoes. It started with my very first pair of Kangaroos. And to L it see, made for tennis I play none of it, but I owned em' in brown and black and suede, but that was hardly the beginnin of my obscene spendin" - Lexicon "Nikehead".

The tennis shoe fetish has long been a part of the hip hop community - whether we're talking about Run-DMC or Lexicon - tennis shoes have been an obsession of many rap artist. My obsession had me running home everyday after school, reaching for my sneaker kit - a shoe box in pristine condition containing a bottle of 1. Rubbing Alcohol 2. Windex 3. A hand towel 4. Clean Shoe Laces - Keeping the sneaks clean was a must.

Louis Vuitton has teamed up with the "Imelda Marcos" of the tennis shoe game - The Louie Vuitton Don himself, Mr. Kanye West. Kanye designed a line of 5 shoes for the French fashion house, with oversight from their chief designer Marc Jacobs. The red shoe design below was the only one that made the cut for the show.

“The inspiration came from a jacket with a huge collar in the movie ‘Dune,’ ” West says. “Most sneakers focus on the tongue, so I wanted to do something different.” West knows whereof he speaks: he says he has no idea how many shoes he owns, but he does know that he routinely needs to send shipments off to storage.

Be on the look out for the LV-KW shoe which is reported to hit stores in June. Start saving now - these bad boys will put you back 5-hundo ($500). Checkout the rest of the colorways below...

Common Concert - Free For Locals Only

NBC is changing the way it delivers information. This month was the roll out of "Locals Only," a website that focuses on providing relevant news, information and entertainment to specific communities i.e. Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco rather than providing news for a certain region.

"NBC's new plan will eliminate the link between its TV stations and their respective Web sites and will target a city's specific online community to help locals stay on top of the latest news and information in their area, regardless of the source. In fact, much of the content on the sites will be gathered from outside content providers or contributed by the audience itself through videos, blogs, and text."

According to NBC Local Media's senior vice president, Brian Buchwald, the new sites will target a group of people NBC is calling "social capitalists" who are passionate about their city and want to "stay ahead of the curve and influence others in their peer groups." Source: CNET

As part of the roll out to promote the new website, NBC is hosting a FREE Concert. Who is the featured artist? None other than Rap Artist Common (seen recently in this badass music video w Pharrell). Recently you may have seen a television commercial advertising a FREE "Common" concert on NBC. Throughout the commercial there is an overlay of text running across the screen, "free Common concert, for locals only, if you can find it." Well your friends at FoundTrack have found the link and are sharing it with you. Click Here for FREE CONCERT CONTEST LINK !

The contest is pretty simple. You are given four pictures of different "Hoods" around the Los Angeles area. The challenge: You must name the "Hood" of each picture provided. Each day, the first 10 individuals to answer correctly will be emailed the location and time of the FREE concert. Sounds easy? See how well you know your "Hood!"

Crooks & Castles' Collection- The Art of Sampling

Crooks & Castles is... Actually, I'll just let them explain who they are and the meaning behind the name. Here it is in their own words:

"Crooks", criminals, pimps, hustlers, thieves, etc. And "Castles" those who got rich by becoming a crook. From the robber barons of the early times like the Vanderbilt's, the Rockefeller's, the Carnegie's to the modern day billionaires - Bill Gates & Microsoft. Those who stopped at nothing to get their "Castle".We too hope one day to be the next rich crook. In some of our designs you might see a familiar icon or logo that we took (stole) and gave it our own twist. We felt that some high fashion brands only catered to someone in a certain lifestyle or with a rather large bank account. Therefore we took what they made and crafted it to fit ours.

Holding true to classic hip-hop form, Crooks have borrowed from elsewhere and made it their own - just like rap artists who have borrowed (sampled) beats and add their own lyrics. After reading what they were about on their site Crooks & Castles I was sold on the brand. Hip-hop artist seem to have much love for the brand. Memphis Bleek was caught rockin' a Crooks T on stage at the Palladium during the Jay-Z concert (where DJ AM made his post-accident live comeback).

The classic play of Versace's Medusa is probably my favorite print they do. I am loving the bandanna made of roses in the picture above (female T). The brand started off doing silk screen prints but is now expanding and collaborating with other brands to create a larger scale of products. Check out the rest of the collection at Crooks & Castles' official site, and in the meantime, catch this collaboration they did with Mosley Tribe (the eyewear company) to create these cool shades, the Castellano's:

DJ Jaguar Skills - Essential Mixes

It's not often I rave about things, but you MUST check out Jaguar Skills' mixes - dropping a crazy mix of hip-hop tracks for 10 mins every week on Trevor Nelson's show (a personal fav of mine) on BBC's Radio 1Xtra. His blog and myspace page provides you with all his mixes for download. Most notable being his 1979-2006 Hip-Hop Odyssey - 800 tracks in a 48 minute mix. Think you can identify all the tracks? Good Luck!
