TV Tuesday: A Very Special Episode...

Is it me or is Television so unflattering these days? Who remembers when you would stay at home on Friday nights just so you could order pizza and watch the latest episodes of "Perfect Strangers", "Step By Step", "Family Matters" and "Full House" on ABC's TGIF, or even random Saturday morning cartoons like "ProStars" and "Camp Candy" from the incredible production company DIC and super-producer Peter Engel's "Saved by the Bell" and "California Dreams?" Maybe I'm stuck in a moment and i can't get out of it but this was what my childhood was all about. If you've been following us you know by now that I might overstate my fair share of Nass-talgia, but the event that's happening tonight at Cinefamily's Silent Movie Theatre happens once in a life-time.

Tonight, we will witness half a dozen fine prime-time quintessential sitcoms involving themes of death, cast members getting backhanded across the room by drunken guest Stars (hint hint-rhymes with Lom Ganks)..., prostitution, surreal dream sequences by Alex P and much more as "very special episodes" get way too specialized. Come one, come all and share laughs since the in-studio audience was forbidden to during the recording. Our favorite example is below courtesy of Youtube's chrono2300 with a special remix edit featuring Le Tigre's version of "I'm so Excited".

Samsonite and Fashionable in the same sentence?... Black Label "Trunk Original"

When the name "Samsonite" comes to mind, I for one think of those hideously gnarly looking hard-shelled 80s suitcases such as this one:


Much to my surprise, I've come to learn that the company has it's roots in some pretty stylish pieces. Take for example this reissue of an original 1920s trunk- The piece is part of Samsonite's high end Black Label. The art deco style, detailing and metal trim on this thing are simply fantastic. I'd really love the white one above if anyone's got a spare $640 lying around. Wait, you DO have an extra $640 and would like to get me an early holiday present?... All you have to do is make your way over to our favorite trendy Parisian boutique Colette to pick one up!

Punch-out! Art by artist Jeff Mcmillan @ Gallery 1988

A few days ago we found out Nintendo is producing a remake of "Punch-out!" for the Wii. Today I stumbled upon this amazing tribute to said retro game franchise by painter Jeff McMillan, entitled "Punchouts." Behold the glory of this work which is available as a print at Gallery 1988:

Real Life Superhero "Jet Man" flies across English Channel

This Swiss dude Yves Rossy gets the bad ass of the week award. Yves is better known as his real life superhero alter ego "Jet Man." A few days ago, Yves jumped out of a plain in France and used his jet pack to fly across the English Channel. He totally reminds me of my favorite character from the 80s cartoon "The Centurions," Ace McCloud the Daring Air Operations Expert:





After 13 minutes of flight at 125 mph,Yves safely parachuted into England:

Nintendo Punch-Out! is back !

One of the most glorious pieces of retro 80s video game history is back! At a press conference this morning, Nintendo announced a new version of the boxing classic "Punch-Out!" for the Wii. I'm usually weary of remakes, but this one looks like it's kept the best of the original, including main character "Little Mac" and villains including King Hippo. Along with Street Fighter IV, the next few months look like a rad time for some vintage gaming nostalgia. Checkout this teaser trailer... the best part is they stuck with the oh so classic music theme:

Gratuitous Nintendo Power Glove Video from "The Wizard"

Any of you kids that grew up in the 80s will totally remember the "Power Glove," a Nintendo controller that promised to be the pinnacle of video game technology, but ended up being a retro fashion treasure. Said fashion piece was first revealed in the 80s video game movie, "The Wizard" starring Wonder Years child star Fred Savage, AND Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis- a film that must have been financed by Nintendo's marketing budget, as it also revealed Super Mario Brothers 3 to the public:

Madonna x Chuck E Cheese's Rock-afire Explosion - "4 Minutes" cover

Those of you that grew up in the 80s or ever went to Chuck E. Cheese or Showbiz Pizza Place, might remember the animatronic Rock-afire Explosion band. Well looks like they're back for a reunion tour thanks to the interwebs and are covering everything from Usher to MGMT. My favorite cover tune of theirs has to be Madonna's "4 Minutes" - All the classic members are back including Mitzi Mozzarella (handling the Material Girl's vocals), Billy Bob, Dook LaRue, Fatz Geronimo, Uncle Klunk, Beach Bear, Rolfe DeWolfe, Looney Bird and Earl Schmerle. Grab yourself some game tokens, mediocre pizza and a pitcher and enjoy:

Amazingly Ridiculous 80s Music Video of the Day - Bobby Brown's "On Our Own"

Have no idea how this popped up into my head, but it probably had to do with a bit of 80s nostalgia chatter that a colleague and I usually get into on a daily basis. On June 16, 1989, a sequel to one of the greatest Ivan Reitman films ever, Ghostbusters, was released, creatively entitled, Ghostbusters II. With said release came the necessary promotional nonsense, including this wicked rad single by Bobby Brown entitled "On Our Own." It managed to get pretty big on the radio at the time, and sadly I have to admit I purchased the single on cassette. Watch now and be baffled by it's glory:

Return of a vintage classic- BMW M1 concept

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of one of the most badass supercars of all time, the BMW M1, the company has created this Hommage concept of a new M1. The low and wide profile perfectly captures the aesthetic of the orginal:

I'm loving this snapshot with the new car and it's BMW supercar brethren- the orange/red color is rad!... reminds me of my parent's crazy eighties furniture!:

A Found Video Gem - Mr. T x Hulk Hogan x ... Andy WARHOL ?!

I think I'm going to have to start paying Sam, uber-guitarist from Bedtime for Toys, a finder's fee for all this madness he digs up. First 2 Photos from G.I. Joe Movie- Everyone's favorite 80s ninja, Snake Eyes

For the summer of 2009, Paramount is making a movie based on another Hasbro toy franchise- a little title called "G.I. Joe." Now, I have to say I actually had no interest in seeing this- the director Stephen Sommers hasn't exactly had a career making movies of substance (wait, but then again neither has Michael Bay). Needless to say, these first two publicity stills from the movie have sparked a definite geek interest. Snake-Eyes was definitely the most badass character on the show:

He's being played by Ray Park (the awesome british martial artist that also played Darth Maul in the Star Wars movies). How do you think he compares to the original?:

Personally I thought that Donatello definitely rocked the best color, but I have to give it up to Michaelangelo since he had the a.d.d. personality i could relate to. Lost Boys 2: The Tribe trailer - Snakes on a Plane 2008?!

Lost Boys Sequel! Will this be a "so bad it's amazing" Snakes on a Plane for 2008, or is it gonna be vintage revival goodness? Who knows!? Who cares?! It's got Cory Feldman in it for god sakes! New Video from Justice - "DVNO" (featuring Rad 80s motion graphics)

Take a gander at the new music video for the track "DVNO" by Justice (who along with MC Solaar and Colette, are the greatest things to come out of France since champagne). This vid is a must see for anyone that's a fan of graphic design, motion graphics, or those funny little brand animations that were part of 80s tv and movie credits. Oh yeah, and one last thing before we get to the video- Enough with this "Justice is really Daft Punk without their masks" urban legend...

Street Fighter IV ?! (Was there even a part III ?!)

Looks like all of us kids of the 80s/90s have another thing to look forward to- a new Street Fighter game is coming out! Most of us had epic battles with Street Fighter II and I think we've all caught ourselves yelling out crazy stuff like "HADOKEN" and "SONIC BOOM" while playing. For the sake of this piece, I'm going to assume there never was a Street Fighter III- I mean if it DOES actually exist, it had to have sucked so badly that I never heard about it...

Checkout these amazing graphics from the new Street Fighter IV. Looks like Capcom (the game studio) got smart and stuck with all the classic characters. As long as the game is as fast paced and responsive as the originals, it could potentially be a big one:

New Kids on the Block Reunion... way cooler than the Spice Girls "Reunion"

After weeks of speculation, looks like we're really getting a New Kids on the Block reunion (by choice?). We here at FoundTrack were actually give the official word a few weeks ago, but were sworn to secrecy by virtue of a promised death by Hollywood talent agent. NKOTB (as they're known to their hardcore fans), have been denying it for weeks, but checkout their newly designed official site- all you eighties Gals out there can obsessively refresh the page for more details to come.
