FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 22/22) - The Menahan Street Band - Going the Distance

The Menahan Street Band - Going the Distance (Track 22 of 22)
Album - Make the Road By Walking (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Dunham (Daptone)

The Menahan Street Band is a super group of the best in brass musicians from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings , El Michels Affair, Antibalas and The Budos Band, brought together by musician/producer Thomas Brenneck to record hits in the bedroom of his Menahan St. apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. With influences reaching beyond the funk/soul/afrobeat architecture of their other projects into the more ethereal realms of Curtis Mayfield and Mulatu Astatke, the Menahan Street Band creates a unique new instrumental soul sound that is as raw as it is lush with eerily quirky arrangements, vibes, horns, piano, organ, and percussion all served with the subtle guitar strings on the album's plate. Their debut album, Make the Road by Walking was released on Dunham Records, Brenneck’s new imprint of Daptone Records. You may have noticed that our featured "Going the Distance" is an interpolation of Bill Conti's famed Rocky score. In concluding this Winter compilation, we just had to make sure we went the distance as well, that is...all the way into summer...lol. Speaking of which, here is some footage from their debut performance last year at NY's annual SummerStage Concert Series in Central Park.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 21/22) Mishka - Above the Bones

Mishka - Above the Bones (Track 21 of 22)
Album - Above the Bones (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Keep Livin'
http://www.myspace.com/4mishka

Mishka, the premiere artist from Mathew McConaughey's newly formed Just Keep Livin label, delivers deep reggae grooves and acoustic roots throughout his critically acclaimed third release, Above the Bones, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard's Reggae charts. Mishka spent most of his childhood on a boat in the Caribbean, traveling the oceans with his seafaring family, inevitably drawn to the music of his battery run cassette player, presenting anything from his parents love for Jimmy Buffet and the Beatles to his sisters infatuation with the Police and Roxy Music. But as soon as he heard Marley, Burning Spear and Jimmy Cliff he became addicted to roots reggae, Rastafari, inspiring him to use make music of his own. On this latest effort, Mishka has teamed up with the legendary Sly and Robbie guitarist Darryl Thompson, who brings forth his fine rock and blues background to the mix. We've featured the album's titled track, Above the Bones, a beautiful folk song about honoring our ancestors and their experiences and allowing that to inspire a prayer for the living . For more info. on how Matt/Mishka/and J.K. Livin came together, check out this interview/performance on Jimmy Kimmel live.

Mishka is currently on tour in the east coast through the end of July. Check his myspace for dates and details.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 20/22) - Gringo Star - All Y'all

Gringo Star - All Y'all (Track 20 of 22)

Album - All Y'all (Sample/Purchase)
Label - My Anxious Mouth
http://www.myspace.com/thegringostars

Georgian garage rockers Gringo Star, not to be confused with the Beatle, first formed under the original moniker A Fir-Ju Well, named after the surname of the original band of bros. Nick and Pete Furgiuele. Several years later, they've fared quite well with a four-man band and their debut full-length, All Y'all, produced/mixed by Ben H. Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective), consisting of a healthy dose of psych-laced garage-rock that shifts styles from surf to psychedelia like their musical brethren, Black Lips. I first got hip to the band at KCRW's CMJ showcase and was very impressed by their sound, drawing links to the early kinks and The Animals of the 60's heyday. Here's the music video to our featured four to the floor banger, All Y'all.

For All Y'all who weren't privy to their live show, the band will be playing at this summer's Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. For a preview of some solid alternate live cuts from a previous trip to Chicago, check out their recent daytrotter session.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 19/22) - Illa J - We Here

Illa J - We Here ( Track 19 of 22)
Album - Yancey Boys (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Delicious Vinyl
http://www.myspace.com/illajmusic

Yancey Boys is the debut release from Detroit's Illa J, younger brother of the late great hip-hop producing prodigy James Yancey (AKA Jay Dee/J Dilla). Upon moving to LA to pursue his music career, Illa J had inherited a CD of his brother's unreleased beats from Delicious Vinyl label owner/founder, Michael Ross. With the multi-talented Illa J rhyming and singing over a treasure trove of previously untouched Jay Dee gems, the full-circle collaboration of the Yancey Brothers had begun. Check out the video to our featured cut,"We Here", where Illa J's soulful tenor delivers a celebration to be had on the first and every day of the year.

Don't miss Illa J, as he performs at the weekly Low End Theory at the airliner club in downtown LA on June 17th.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 18/22) - Maus Haus - Rigid Breakfast

Maus Haus - Rigid Breakfast (Track 18 of 22)
Album - Lark Marvels (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Pretty Blue Presents
http://www.myspace.com/maushausmusic

Maus Haus are a San Francisco sextet who obviously aren't photogenic, but have opened my eyes and ears to their experimental efforts of freaky electro post-rock on their debut full-length, Lark Marvels. Recorded over the last year in San Francisco, the album's 12 songs contain a variety of modes, often recalling rhythm-shifting 60s psych pop a la Captain Beefheart , krautrock, avant jazz, and a ramshackle of electronic sounds, all mastered by Roger Seibel (Tortoise, !!!, Coco Rosie, Pit er Pat, Elliot Smith). Our featured "Rigid Breakfast" brings to mind a liftoff into an underground labratory with an inception of a robot gone extremely bad. Here's to considering it.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 17/22) - Rainbow Arabia - Omar K

Rainbow Arabia - Omar K (Track 17 of 22)
Album - The Basta EP (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Manimal Vinyl
http://www.myspace.com/rainbowarabia

Rainbow Arabia are husband and wife Echo Park-based duo, Danny and Tiffany Preston, both with a penchant for middle eastern dance music, mixed with some 808, earthshattering electro-lized elephantitus of the basslines. As if the crucial picture above doesn't tell the story. They are currently working on a full-length debut but please do catch their bombastic EP, The Basta as well as the limited edish Omar K seven inch single in the jungle colored vinyl format. Find a number of remixes and newer cuts on their rcrdlbl page. However, Sinead would agree that nothing compares to their highly touted, enriching live performance and just after they leave France this week they are returning home for a couple of LA appearances including next week at Spaceland's Club NME night. Here's an interesting music video to our featured, Omar K, which must have been shot in our fabled Rock N' Roll Ralphs, where you are sure to find hollywood's batch of animal crackers coming to life most sat nights/sunday mornings.

And by interesting, i mean absolutely insane. Wonder what this kid wants to be when he grows up?

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 16/22) - Rootbeer - Pink Limousine

Rootbeer - Pink Limosine (Track 16/22)

Album: Pink Limousine EP (Sample/Purchase)

Unsigned but not unnoticed, Beverly Hills-based Rootbeer, a duo comprised of LA Symphony producer/member Pigeon John and Flynn Adam, obvious fans of Hall and Oates (the only influence listed on the pair’s Myspace), meld an array of exotic rhythms and danceable beats on their single “Pink Limousine,” track 16 on Foundtrack’s Winter 2009 Compilation. “Pink Limousine’s” groovable bongo beats, rap cadences, tongue-in-cheek tinges, and infectious hooks make for appealing hipster Hip-hop, a style that permeates Rootbeer’s 5-song Pink Limousine EP that was released on March 10. Although Rootbeer threatens, “Watch or die!,” try to sit back and relax with the single’s chic and entertaining music video.

As part of their “Pink Limousine Tour” that began back on March 14, Rootbeer sweetened up several southwestern cities including Austin for the SXSW Music and Media Conference. In case you're in San Diego this evening, the bubbly pair plan to play at the annual Sun God Fest at UCSD alongside N.E.R.D, Cool Kids, Iron and Wine, and more.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 15/22) - Black Taxi - Pretty Mama

Black Taxi - Pretty Mama (Track 15/22)
Album - Black Taxi EP (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Self-Release
http://www.myspace.com/blacktaximusic

When in New York, visitors are warned about flagging down the black taxis prowling the streets and offering suspicious rides. This Black Taxi, however, cannot be ignored, especially with their seductive “Pretty Mama”, which has flagged down a spot on FoundTrack’s Winter 2009 Compilation. This year has brought Black Taxi much deserved success. The band consisting of Ezra Huleatt (vocals, trumpet, “etc.”), Bill Mayo (guitar, vocals), Krisana Soponpong (bass), and Jason Holmes (drums, vocals) can celebrate the victorious title of NY’s M.E.A.N.Y Festival Finals champions at Santo’s Party House in NY, bask in the glory of a litany of rave reviews, and boast two EP’s available and well worth your digital dollar on iTunes. It is impossible to characterize Black Taxi’s sound, since each song from their EP melds multiple genres to create unique listening experiences. But, “Pretty Mama” highlights Black Taxi’s bluesy boldness, unconventional lyrical accents, and unmatched instrumental and rhythmic arrangements. The West coast can only wait with envy while Black Taxi entertains the eastside with their shows at the Seaside Tavern in Stamford, CT on May 15th, and the Mountain Jam Festival on May 29 in Hunter, NY. Also included on Myspace are a bevy of live videos, photos, a nod to Foundtrack (We made top friends!), and a quote from the CMJ Top 5 Bands article by yours truly. Check out this live performance of "Wanted Man" on Fearless Music in NYC.

Black Taxi has also landed a couple music placements in MERRIme.com, a new comedic web series which is set to launch this summer. Until then be sure to check out Merrime.com to hear our featured "Pretty Mama" in the series teaser/trailer.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 14/22) - The Welcome Wagon - Sold! To the Nice Rich Man

The Welcome Wagon - Sold! To the Nice Rich Man (Track 14/22)
Album - Welcome to the Welcome Wagon (Sample/Purchase)

Welcome to the Welcome Wagon! What an aptly titled debut from the Presbyterian 2-pack of The Rev. Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique, who proselitize religious music haters like me due to the duets faithful, yet good-humored folk-gospel born out of the living room sing-along tradition. In addition to indie "sacred" hymns, and psalms you'll discover the pair have read their music bibles, with coverage of The Velvet Underground's "Jesus" in addition to The Smiths "Half A Person." The record also happens to have the thumbprint of one of their brooklyn neighbors/ Asthmatic Kitty label head/One of my favorite artists of all time, Sufjan Stevens, who recorded, produced and arranged for the record. This can best be heard on our featured "Sold! To the Nice Rich Man", with the usual Sufjany orchestral manouvres of showy guitar riffs and piano codas, chock-full of glockenspiel, a rowdy chorus, and an imposing flourish of brass instruments like wartime canons. In case you Sufjan fans are wondering, Stevens' "Vito's Ordination Song" is named after this very Vito's spiritual conversion at the age of 20. Although they've already turned some heads, it's never too late to jump on this band's wagon...whah whah whah!

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 13/22) - Hauschka - Freibad

Hauschka - Freibad (
Track 13/22)
Album -Ferndorf (Sample/Purchase)
Label - FatCat
http://www.myspace.com/hauschka

Dusseldorf-based experimental pianist / composer Volker Bertelmann’s work as Hauschka is based upon a playful exploration of the possibilities of the 'prepared' piano – an adventurous intervention into the preconceived idea of the piano as a pure-toned, perfected instrument simply waiting for a gifted virtuoso like himself to turn it on. His resulting tracks are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm. The album title of his second FatCat release, ‘Ferndorf’ (which translates as ‘distant village’), relates to the small, central German village set in a landscape of valleys and pine forests, in which Volker grew up. ‘Ferndorf’ is a far more expansive and fully-realized album than his previous body of work, with many of the tracks also featuring a string duo, enabling an increased solidity where his staccato stabbing rhythms are rendered increasingly rousing and emotive with these additional strings. Our featured ‘Freibad’ translates into an outdoor swimming pool in the forest, where you can go swimming in the moonlight. For those of you in LA, you can catch Hauschka's captivating performance live tonight at Largo at the Coronet for the record release show for labelmate Tom Brosseau. In case you miss out, here's a live segment of our featured cut.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 12/22) - Josh Pyke - The Lighthouse Song

Josh Pyke - The Lighthouse Song (Track 12/22)

Album - Chimney's Afire (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Ivy League
http://www.myspace.com/joshpyke

Josh Pyke is an Australian singer-songwriter who writes music that makes you want to spoon by the fire. "Chimney's Afire", the aptly titled follow up to his award-winning debut, is the term used for the cry whalers of yesteryear make when they harpooned a whale and a plume of blood and water spurted out of its blowhole into the air. Gnarly image i know... but kind of beautiful at the same time...sort of like Pinochio's Daring Journey. "Chimney's Afire" depicts soothing images of a nautical nature and maritime themes suitable for a soundtrack to the tales of Huck Finn, Moby Dick and Magellan. Inspired by his own seafaring adventures taking annual beach trips to Patonga with his family when he was little, Pyke traverses an ocean of memories, ideas and thoughts about everyday concerns, with stability and the notion of making up your own mind emerging as overriding themes. So with that said, make up YOUR mind and get me this super cool GUITAR BOAT in the "Make You Happy" video below. My bday is only 11 months away and I promise it will make ME happy.

This boat was created to the exact specifications of the Maton acoustic guitar that he performs with, at Rozelle Bay on October 9, 2008 in Sydney, Australia.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 11 of 22) - Gigi - The Hundredth Time

Gigi - The Hundredth Time (Track 11 of 22)
Album - Maintenant

I remember the first time i listened to our featured "The Hundredth Time", it was as if a firetruck had been approaching. I had to pull my car over, listen closely and wait until Liza Richardson had back-announced the beautiful pop ballad on a mid-winter night, afraid that i might never be able to hear the song again. One hundred times later, it still amazes me to find out that the composition is contemporary, in fact it was an advance from a record that has still yet to be released. Gigi is a side project of Vancouver based songwriter, Nick Krgovich. He is the primary force behind other notable groups To Bad Catholics, P:ano, Burquitlam Plaza, and most recently No Kids. A few years ago after receiving two vintage reverb plates, primary engineer and co-founder of Hive Studios Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Pretty Girls Make Graves) invited Nick and a handful of friends/clients (Great Aunt Ida, Veda Hille, etc.) into the Hive Studio to record some songs with the 60's Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" in mind. Those 600 pound tectonic plates from the late 50's simulate the natural echo chamber heard in a real physical room. Make sure to check out the band's myspace page for the latest updates and details from the upcoming "Maintenant" LP.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 10/22) - Lights On - John And Anne

Lights On - John And Anne (Track 10/22)
Label - Self-Release
Album - Waiting For the Heart to Beat EP (Sample/Purchase)
http://www.myspace.com/lightsonband
Photo Taken By Christy Zaragoza

Lights On is the collaborative creation of Tim Hines and Mike Kamoo, two San Diegans who came from different bands/backgrounds in the SD scene to produce a fresh blend of Post-Punk guitars and Electronic/New Wave melodies with an indie rock aesthetic. Upon first listen to Lights On, I was struck by such a diverse yet reminiscent sound. One of their standouts, "Listen to the Radio" sounds like a cross between the Arcade Fire's "Rebellion/Lies" and Modern English's "I'll Melt With You" yet our featured "John and Anne" sounded like The Stars and Echo and the Bunnymen's take on Peter, Bjorn and John's "Young Folks". Pretty impressive coming from a band with just one self-released EP under their name. Even more impressive was their reception from our reader poll on favorite tracks from our Winter Collection, locking 44 votes and counting. The band has added a batch of new material on their myspace and I'm excited to see they will be in LA at Spaceland with Loney Dear on the 16th of May. Highly anticipating a solid full-length coming soon from these guys so stay tuned for more.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 9/22) - Sporto Kantes - Whistle

Sporto Kantes - Whistle (Track 9/22)
Album - 3 At Last (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Le Village Vert
http://www.myspace.com/sportokantesofficial

Sporto Kantes is what happens when Benjamin Sportes meets Nicolas Kantorovwicz. The Parisian electro-duo formed in the aftermath of the first wave of mid-'90s French house lapped up by those seeking a way to wind down after a night of furious funking to the likes of Pepe Bradock and Daft Punk. Benjamin's forte was Rockabilly whereas Nicolas specialized in Trash, but when they unite you hear everything from dub, jazz, reggae, hip hop to Latin and Afro-Cuban influences with modern breakbeat technology. Overall insanely catchy and fun downtempo electro formed from sampling with an Atari S 2000. Special Thanks To David @ Third Side for hipping us in the states to this freshness. If this hasn't been in a commercial yet, it defly belongs there. Here's the video to our featured hit,"Whistle".

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 8/22) - Little Red - Coca Cola

Little Red - Coca Cola (Track 8/22)
Album - Listen to Little Red (Import Only)
Label - Hooch Hound/Shock
http://www.myspace.com/littleredmusic

Melbourne's Little Red caught my ear immediately upon taking the advice of their commanding debut self-release "Listen to Little Red". You'd think that a band comprised of 5 kids with a combined age of less than a century would sound a bit adolescent but these guys sound like their forefathers...i'm sorry, five fathers.
I know that this retro-sound is getting a little too reworked these days but Little Red's music isn't contrived and sounds like they could keep up with Marty McFly and his bandmates on prom night in Back to the Future. Although you may not have heard of them yet in the states, these kids are huge in Europe and Australia, playing about every festival you can imagine and earning high honors on the reputable radio stations such as Australia's Triple J. They are now embarking on the "Here Comes the Night" tour named after their second album. Here is the video to our featured "Coca Cola" to quench your thirst.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 7/22) - Theresa Andersson - Birds Fly Away

Label - Basin St. Records

Photo Taken By Miranda Penn Turin

Theresa Andersson is a New Orleans based, singer songwriter with a penchant for unconventionality. Instead of seeking refuge in recording her debut album, Hummingbird, Go! in the outskirts, Theresa sought inspiration from her own environment and the earthy and organic elements of the lands she knew best. From her adopted home in New Orleans, she inherited the sounds of its rich musical landscape, with featured guest and Louisiana legend, Allen Touissant. Theresa also found a great source in the wonderful think tank that is her kitchen, which was the studio where she recorded her demos and her full-length. Soda pop bottles mimicked sounds of the vibraphone and instead of a keyboard she rubbed the rims of filled wine glasses. Theresa beatboxed the percussive elements and slide guitar textures were taken from her specialty instrument, the violin. And yet, Hummingbird, Go! also brought Andersson full circle, back to her childhood home: The Swedish island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea, as she happened upon acclaimed producer Tobias Froberg (Peter Moren) at a New Orleans club and he would eventually turn into her productioin chief, providing some of her native Scandinavian indie pop and adding Norwegian artist Ane Brun to the guestlist on the final product. In order to replicate this home-made album on tour, Theresa has crafted a one-woman band set-up, using two looping pedals and a variety of effects. This captivating showmanship can be best seen in one of the videos that gave her worldwide appeal on youtube, such as this home video from her kitchen of our featured "Birds Fly Away".

Birds on the street says Theresa killed it in Austin. Be sure to check her myspace for updates on her touring schedule.

FoundTrack's Winter '09 Collection (Track 5/22) - School of Seven Bells - Connjur

School of Seven Bells - Connjur
(Track 5/22)
Album - Alpinisms (Sample/Purchase)
Label - Ghostly Intl
http://www.myspace.com/schoolofsevenbells
http://www.schoolofsevenbells.com/

At a time when band names are so hard to conjure, especially without the aid of a trip to the zoo, School of Seven Bells allowed their name to create a sound all their own. While on tour for their respective bands in '04, Alejandra and Claudia Deheza (On-Air Library!) and Benjamin Curtis (Secret Machines) connected one late night watching a PBS documentary on a mythical South American Pickpocket Academy in the 80's named the School of Seven Bells, sparking a creative reconnaissance of cryptic musicality between the threesome. A few years later their experiments in sound would gain the attention of Blonde Redhead, Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Prefuse 73, whose "Class of 73 Bells"- a re-working of SVIIB's "Iamundernodisguise"- introduced me to the band's work.

Now on their marvelous debut, Alpinisms, the bells ring with elements of dream-pop, IDM, and beaty shoe-gazery wrapped around Curtis' gentle guitar and the sisters acapellic chants. They were the talk of this year's CMJ festival in NY, and have become a station favorite on the other coast with a string of consecutive weeks on top of KCRW's weekly charts, a solid live session on Morning Becomes Eclectic with Jason Bentley, and now headliners of the station's official showcase at SXSW in Austin. Here's a video of the Brooklyn trio's "Half-Asleep" by Toby Holbrooks.

London’s We Have Band bring an unmistakably danceable vibe to FoundTrack’s Winter ’09 Compilation with their single “Oh!” featuring Thomas WP on Vocals/Guitar/Bass/Programming, Dede WP on Vocals/Percussion/Sampler, and Darren Bancroft on Vocals/Drums/Percussion/Sampler. We Have Band are another example of electro-masterminds emanating from overseas, and the track’s contagious call and response form, trippy ambiance, and echoing, ascending “Oh’s” produce an energizing mood ideal for a night out on the dance floor. Already subject to multiple remixes (Micachu Remix, Gentleman Driver, and Andrew “Friendly Fires” Remix), the original is still available for download on the FoundTrack compilation, so get grooving and get dancing. Additionally, We Have Band’s “Oh!” has an oh-so-appealing debut music video directed by Tom Ellis at Last Seagull

Relatively new on the UK scene, We Have Band have not released an official EP or album (there is a WHB Sampler floating about somewhere), but “Oh!” has been released as a single on the UK 50 cents label and placed on the hip Kitsune Maison 6 Compilation. The group is currently touring through Europe and will be hitting North America for SXSW in March (18th-22nd) before heading back to their home continent for the final dates in April. Meanwhile, we DO have We Have Band’s website, Myspace page, and iTunes downloads to enjoy.

In appropriate fashion, The Boxer Rebellion launch the new year and our Winter '09 collection with "Evacuate", a thrilling drumbeat and guitar-filled leap into an epic masterpiece. The lead hit was just recently featured worldwide as the Itunes FREE Single of the Week, an unprecedented move made even more remarkable given the band were and remain..although not for long, unsigned..In case you missed out on the free feature, "Evacuate" will continue to remain available to you via our winter collection download, so get your mittens on the goods while it's hot. Here's a video for the featured cut directed by D.A.R.Y.L. of Pulse Films.

Well...there's much more where "Evacuate" came from, the Boxer Rebellion's much-anticipated self-produced sophomore record, Union (physical release dates forthcoming). Criply mixed togeher by Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters/Feeder) and mastered by Kevin Metcalfe (U2, Prodigy), Union sees the UK four-piece taking their already lofty ambitions to subliminal heights with soaring Thom Yorkesque vocals and epic instrumentals in the vein of Coldplay/U2. From the tribal-drum explosion of current KCRW favorite "Flashing Red Light Means Go", through the aptly wintry atmospherics of "The Gospel of Goro Adachi" to live favorites "Semi-Automatic" and our featured "Evacuate", Union is an album that transcends convention in a seismic blast of unfettered invention. Listen to the album for yourself at Reverb Nation. The band is currently prepping for a Spring '09 tour so check their myspace for dates soon to be announced.
